Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I am the Christian mother of twins. I have always loved Veggietales because I feel like it teaches Biblical stories in a way that children enjoy and understand. With this movie though...I'm a little conflicted. Here's why:
The plot:
Basically there are these vegetables that work in the vegetable pirate version of Midevil Times. One is lazy, one is scared of everything, and the other has little vegetable children that don't believe he's really all that great of a guy because he's not like the lead pirate in the play. They travel back in time to help a prince who has been captured by pirates.
It's a cute plot, but part of what I have always liked about Veggietales is the Biblical aspect, even some of the ones that weren't exactly about a Biblical story had Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato giving Bible verses at the end, and explaining the moral of the story. This doesn't have that.
The content:
One thing I hate about kids movies these days are the innuendos. Someone told me once that they add these adult innuendos to make the story more interesting to adults. I really don't need that. I just want something I can have my children repeat in public and not be embarrassed. This movie had no innuendos. It is completely kid friendly! I love that! While it may not have taught a Biblical story, it definitely teaches good traits (ie. my dad doesn't have to be a super hero to be a great guy, anyone can be a hero etc.).
The attention keeping quality:
My twin boys love this movie. I can put it in and immediately they are glued. Amazingly I really haven't gotten tired of it yet (i'm sure that day will come). They laugh at the show, and just when they are starting to lose some interest, a song comes on! There's a lot of music and deep wonderful color.
Availability:
With the Internet, everything is available all the time...but if you are like me and have some apprehension about putting your credit card number over the internet, you may be wondering where you can get this. To be honest it's touch-and-go. In our area (and many others), they only offer the most recent veggie tales movies. You may consider second-hand stores, buy-back places etc. My policy is...if I see a new Veggietales movie I snatch it up right away (if I have the money of course), because I never know when I will see it again!
Overall it's a great movie, but if you are looking for one about a Biblical story it's not for you. If you are simply looking for a movie that teaches good values, is an attention getter, and won't fill your child's head with things they ought not be saying....IT'S PERFECT.
