| jqu1232's Full Review: Plantronics DSP-500 Headset |
I have been using this headset for over a year now, and it still works great. The sound quality is very good. I edit audio frequently and this headset allows me to hear every frame of audio clearly. The headset does not rely on the sound card, it has its own sound processing unit on the cord. This can make it bulky and hard to use at various places. The cord attached to it is very long. It is very light and comfortable.
The sound quality is very good for a variety of purposes. I play games often and it gives me an edge against others who have a poor sound system. If any of my games have voice chat, this headsets microphone is amazing. I often use it for communication instead of the phone because of the great quailty. The microphone has very good noise cancelling. People I talk to cannot hear the whine of all of my fans from my computer. The microphone boom is adjustable, and it stays where you put it. When not in use, it can be swung up vertically. Plantronics really nailed the bendablity perfectly. Old headsets I used always had microphone booms that bent easily, bending every time I put them down. On this headset you only need to adjust the boom once and leave it there.
There is a small clip that has volume controls, and a button to mute the microphone. They are both handy, but the volume control is used much more than the mute. It is very convenient to only have to reach towards your chest, or wherever you decide to clip it, that to go into volume options, especially when you are in games. The mute button is useful when you are having a conversation with another person, and need to keep them from hearing something.
The digital sound processing unit is great in many ways, but it also has its downfalls. The quality of sound is great because the sound is not being processed by my integrated sound card. The downside is that this only works with a usb port, limiting the headsets usability and portability. The DSP unit is also heavy, causing you to have to pull on the cord every once and a while unless you tie it down. Usually the cord is long enough to have the DSP unit on the floor, and still have enough lenth to reach you head with some slack.
At first, I considered returning this headset because it made my ears hurt if worn to long. You will get over it after a few weeks or so. Now when I wear it, it is extremely light. Adjusting the fit is easy, and the headphones actually stay at where you put them. They are very nicely balanced in every position. The microphone is not heavier than the other side when it's down or up.
Overall, a good alternative to speakers.
