Plastec Saucer and Plant Caddy - It's pretty and sturdy, but a bit expensive.
Written: Jan 12 '10 (Updated Mar 28 '11)
Pros:Sturdy, useful, attractive.
Cons:Doesn't hold as much water as I'd like, a bit expensive.
The Bottom Line: This product helps me move my heavy plants, and helps keep the deck clean!
Eventually house plants can become very heavy. Most notably, I have a large planter holding three pineapple plants. The planter is so heavy that whenever we had to move it, it would take two of us pushing and pulling at it. Eventually, the planter cracked, from all the tugging. That's when we invested in a plant caddy. What's a plant caddy? A plant holder, with wheels. In this case, I'm referring to Plastec's 14" Saucer and Caddy Combination.
This is a round caddy, with a 14" diameter. Four sturdy wheels are attached to a sturdy, dark brown, wire frame. You can place your planter right on top of the wire frame, or you can insert the plastic "saucer". The plastic saucer sits right inside the wire frame, and contains four indented "wells" to hold the water that drains from the planter. So, if you set the planter directly onto the wire frame, any water that drips out will land directly on the ground. This might be acceptable if your plant is outdoors, on a deck, or a lawn. But if you insert the saucer, first, then the water will settle into the four indentations, keeping the floor dry. But, at less than 1/2" deep, the indentations are pretty shallow. If you really over-water your plant, the water can certainly run off the saucer onto your floor.
We were happy to read that this product can hold up to 250 pounds. That's certainly enough to hold our pineapple plants. And, sure enough, the saucer is not cracked, warped, or dented at all. And the wire frame is in perfect shape, not mis-shapen at all.
The wheels are welded into place, and are capable of spinning in multiple directions. Thus it's a simple matter to roll the caddy forwards, backwards, and sideways. This is extremely useful to us as we keep this plant on our deck, but need to move it periodically, so we can clean the deck.
In fact, that's another advantage to using a caddy - keeping the planter off the deck means there's no dirt and water getting trapped underneath the planter; our deck stays much cleaner this way!
This product is actually very pretty. Not that its looks really matter, since it's covered with a planter that hides nearly the entire diameter of the caddy. But the metal frame is actually quite intricate, with 'curlicues' wrapping around the saucer's indentations. And the saucer's indentations are stamped with a leafy design.
Like I said, its attractiveness doesn't really matter, but it's nice to know anyway. Mostly, this product is sturdy, and really helps when we need to move our heavy planter around. Furthermore, it helps keep our deck clean. A little pricey, at $18, but it's very useful!
