I never pass by the cat toy aisle when I go to the pet store to buy cat food or cat treats.  This last visit was no different.  I checked out the new toys that my two cats might like.

I found a cute fuzzy mouse that was actually the size of a real mouse.  I pondered whether or not my cats would like this mouse, for they really like the tiny mice they can bat around easily.

As I picked up the card to which the mouse was attached, the mouse began to squeak!  The toy is called Play-N-Squeak “MouseHunter.”  The card claimed this mouse is the only toy with an electronic real mouse sound.  The sound module produces a realistic mouse squeak!  The directions state in order for the mouse to squeak, a tab is supposed to be removed from the bottom of the toy to activate the sound.  I checked them all out, and there was not tab to be removed, so I had a chorus of mice squeaking away in the pet store!

I tossed one into my cart and as I walked around the store, this little toy mouse was squeaking away.  Other patrons were staring at me; they possibly thought I had a real mouse in my cart I was about to purchase!

Description:

The Play-N-Squeak MouseHunter mouse measures 3” in length and has a 3” long felt tail.  The ears are made of tan felt and the eyes are safe, black knots of thread, unlike the plastic beaded eyes that are sometimes stuck in the head of a toy mouse with a pin.  The mouse is brown in color and is made of 100% fuzzy polyester fabric.  The tag and card claim the mouse contains catnip, but I doubt it does, for Peanut can detect catnip as soon as I walk into the house with a package containing a toy with catnip.

My Cat’s Experience:

Even though my cats are strictly indoor cats, they are natural hunters by instinct.  They express their hunting instincts by either stalking each other or stalking toys that are their imaginary prey.

The Play-N-Squeak MouseHunter is supposed to contain catnip which my 15 year old cat, Peanut, especially enjoys.  I could hardly wait until I returned home to show the cats their new toy.

Five year old, Jelly, immediately got up from his nap to see what was squeaking as I entered the house.  Peanut was sleeping and I thought because of his age, he didn’t hear the squeaking.  I shook the mouse into Peanut’s ear.  He definitely heard the mouse but portrayed that he was much too intelligent to actually believe this was a real mouse!  I don’t believe this mouse ever contained catnip or it did not contain a strong enough brand, for Peanut could care less about this mouse and he ordinarily goes bananas over catnip.

Jelly, on the other hand, batted the mouse around for quite a long time until he got pooped out.  Peanut seemed to enjoy watching him make a fool of himself with a fake mouse!

Now, as with all their toys, I hide the mouse for a while so they don’t become bored and I take it out at random so they have something different to play with.  By doing this, they have Christmas nearly every day!
