Pros: What Can I Say, Cowboy Casanova, the voice
Cons: Very commercial and some songs made me hit FF right away
The Bottom Line: I'm thinking you don't have to buy this album if you listen to the country radio, better ones will be there and forget the rest

| kirsib's Full Review: Play On * by Carrie Underwood |
Carrie, she keeps pushing and this new album starts with a quite a bang. Cowboy Casanova shows Carrie as a confident woman who is not afraid to use her sexuality to get what she wants. The video is quite a show off, little like Carrie does Madonna. She is no Madonna but I like the song and nobody can say that she cannot sing. This song is to me more pop music than country, but she is working it, no question about it!
Next comes Quitter, she keeps draaaaaagggiiing her words and frankly I don't like the song. Melody is boring and lyrics are dull. Well, most likely this will be a huge hit. I've been oh so wrong about her songs before. Not country, that is for sure. This is a kind of a folk song, is she turning into Jewel? And I like Jewel but this was not a compliment.
I like the next slower song called Mama's Song. Finally Carrie sings more and screams less. Fits better under the country category. Carrie singing to her mama and I can imagine this will come out with some awesome video one day. Is that a whole orchestra behind her? Okay this song keeps dragging towards the end, I'm getting a little worried about her!
Carrie keeps it slow in the Change and this one has a great beat. ...just a fool just a fool who believes you can change the world... Really nicely produced, this will be a hit.
Attitude comes back for the next song Undo It, Carrie does Shania Twain, and yes, she can pull it off! Those cheating men, they can not have her. Quite catchy, funny for sure. Next comes a classic beautiful country song, slow ballad with a guitar and Carrie is feeling sad. Someday When I Stop Loving You, that title pretty much sums it up. Nothing new or exciting but well done nevertheless.
I'm not sure the order of these songs was really done right, next comes totally different tune. From the sadness to the revenge and it is almost too much to chew one after each other. Songs Like This is yet another not so country, but very commercially planned tune about those no good guys in this world Carrie hates in her songs so well. Naah from me.
Then for some reason we travel again to a totally different mood set with Carrie singing about Temporary Home. Pretty tune, nice instruments behind her and a sad story about living somewhere in between. Sadly this is an every day dream for many, to move out from their current hopefully a temporary home. Carrie goes high, lyrics go on about an old man on his journey from his temporary home in the hospital to where he belongs. I'm sorry but I just want to puke, it sounds so fake..
Next the happy pills kick in. Carrie likes the way everything is This Time. Tempo is faster and she keeps using those pipes and sings all the cliches about a life being short, you can think of. Guitar is nice but she keeps screaming too high for me once again. Many people will like it no doubt but I'm not one of them.
Carrie turns back to classical country ballad tuning herself for a little more loving person telling her man how she feels, when he is looking at her. Very pretty but believable? I guess if you really want to believe. Orchestra powers behind her once again in Unapologize, very pop, too loud for me. I'm thinking those lyrics are really, I mean really, dull. She could not choose something little deeper to work with?? Why do I feel this disappointed?
What Can I Say shows Carrie singing very well once again, she is hitting some amazing high notes. This is a duet with Sons of Sylvia (previously The Clark Brothers) and sounds really good. This just might be the best song in the whole album. I love the way they are singing on top of each other, powerful stuff for sure, excellent production for this song.
Carrie ends this album with a bonus track number 13, one of the better ones here, so just Play On. Flowing melody and this is karaoke stuff with easy lyrics and just keep repeating that phrase, maybe that is just enough brain washing for the radio stations to keep playing on her music..
Overall this is quite an expected album from Carrie, there is some very nice songs and no doubt it will fly off the shelves like cupcakes. Do I think this is an amazing album? Not for me, but then again I did not love her previous album either. If you liked it you will love this one too. Big production, powerful confident voice Carrie has, and the body she will show off. She is set to promote this one for a long time! I'd say it is a B- at best, if all you think is the music and forget about the visuals and videos.
