Freak369's Full Review: Playmobil 7371 Knights Castle Treasure
If you are a fan of Playmobil and love the castle themed sets then this add-on is more than worth checking out if you want to add some accessories to a scene. I wasn't all that keen on it when I first saw the preview of it at The Con but I knew that if I didn't get it when I had the chance, when I did get around to getting it, it would be sold out. Annabelle has been working on her own Princess themed castle and liked some of the gold items in this add-on set so I knew that there wouldn't be many pieces that would go to waste. One thing that I didn't like about the Knights Castle Treasure is that it is extremely heavy in gold items but there are only three silver helmets and one pale gray goblet. This makes it a great pick for a royal themed scene if you don't want to modify your existing pieces with paint or metallic permanent markers but a little bit of variety would have made this set a lot more appealing.
There are a few colored pieces but they are kitchen and table items; the pink water jug was a huge hit with Annabelle but the large water urn in forest green was completely overlooked. There are a few small glasses / goblets but not enough that you will be able to do anything major with them. The only way that you are going to be able to add these to a huge table for a feast is if you buy more than one set or if Playmobil releases something with more kitchen and tale themed items in it. I was impressed with the small gold bowls that come with the set, they can be used for a lot of things in scenes or to hold items but they are impossible to get into the hand of a figure because of the limited movement of the figures hands. The most awesome piece in the set has to be the king statue; I have never seen a piece like this before so it was super sweet to get one with this add-on pack.
If you are looking for weapons for your knights or royal figures, there are a couple of great elements to the Knights Castle Treasure Pack. There is a curved blade scythe styled weapon that looks so cool when you have it raised in the air. The two generic swords look great in the gold color and there is a mini knife that fits inside most of the knights belts so it can be carried or slid into a holder. You also get three sets of snap on weaponry. These are more for show than anything else but when you apply them to a figure it can make them a little clunky when you try to put a knight on a horse. For the royal members there are seven head pieces such as crowns and circlets. These are nice but rather plain and boring compared to the pieces that come with the larger sets. If you have small plastic gemstones you can try glueing them on to the crowns if you want but we didn't have much luck getting them to stick to the plastic.
As a whole the collection of pieces in the Knights Castle Treasure Pack are great but there could have been a little more variety. It is heavy with gold colored items so if you are looking for silver pieces, this isn't for you. Playmobil has some other add-on sets that are packed with accessories that you can purchase to make your scene look better. This is strictly an add-on set and is made for kids that are three and older but I have to disagree with that age recommendation. There are some small pieces in this set and they could easily get gobbled up by younger kids if they are not put away when play time is over. Likewise, you can expect some of these pieces to go missing after a couple of months because of their size. Even if they get put away at the end of the day, they could sink to the bottom of a bin or case and not be discovered for a long time.
The Knights Castle Treasure could have used some gemstones or jeweled pieces to give them a more royal feel. It has a suggested retail price of $9.99 and it is worth it if you are looking for add-on accessory pieces. I got this for seven dollars so I can't really complain about the price of it; there are bargains to be had on sets like this but you do have to do some snooping around to find them. This is a relatively new set from Playmobil and since it is a bagged set instead of something that comes boxed it may be almost impossible to find in retail stores unless they specialize in Playmobil themed sets.
