This is #4658 Playmobil Deep Sea Diver. This figure was released by Playmobil in April 2007 and is sold individually under the Playmobil Special line for $2.99. It can also be found at Target stores for $1.99.
The box includes a total of 16 pieces, some which are already assembled on the figure. Included are: a diving helmet, shoulder plate (I'm not sure if this is the correct technical term for it but thats the best I can come up with. It's the thing he wears over his shoulders that the helmet snaps on to.), 2 sleeves, 2 platform shoes, 2 metal weights, belt, knife, spotlight, spotlight lens, hook, string, handle for string, and the figure itself. Assembly is quite easy and shouldn't take more than a few minutes.
What instantly attracted me to this figure is just the antique look of it and I guess I'm just into things that have a retro look to it. The diving gear is done in a nice rusty brown color, which adds to the effect.
Compared to other Playmobil figures, the Deep Sea Diver stands a bit taller mostly because of the tall platform shoes he's wearing. The purpose of the tall shoes is to accommodate the metal weights, which you insert into the bottom of each shoe. The metal weights look like they could be made of lead, but in actuality, they're probably made out of die-cast metal, like the stuff Hot Wheels cars are made from. His weighted shoes allow him to sink feet first under water. All of his accessories are completely removable, but you'll have to take the hair off of his head before you can remove his shoulder plate. Don't worry, his hair will snap back on to his head.
Does this belt make me look fat?
One thing that doesn't work quite well is his belt. While it looks good on him, it makes his waist too wide and prevents him from being able to put his arms straight down by his sides. Also, while the belts of other figures, like the knights, have a loop to hold their swords, the Deep Sea Diver's belt does not have such a loop for his knife so he'll just have to keep holding it in his hands. Another thing of note is that the spotlight he carries is exactly the same one used by the Astronaut figure.
This is a great looking figure to collect. But if you're looking for a more practical use, I think he would make the perfect prop for an aquarium.
