Pros: Very cool double bladed battle ax, awesome colors, horse cover, nice logo.
Cons: Hard to find in retail stores, no other companion knights.
When the catalog for new Playmobil sets came out in mid 2005 there were more than a few sets that I wanted to get. I had to wait almost a year to get my hands on the Evil Knight; either it was sold out when I would go to order it or it would slip my mind when I was making up a list. Id already gotten the newer Silver Knight and was really impressed with it but nothing really prepares you for the Evil Knight. Not only does he look evil, the companion pieces for the horse are equally impressive. If there is a drawback to this knight and his steed its the overall size of it; well, maybe I should rephrase that. The knight and the horse are the same size as others like the Knight In Armor and Crusader but the black color of the horse, knights outfit and tournament cover make it seem larger than it is. The silver dots that grace the knight and cover may be considered armor but theres no linking in the design so its there, from that I assume, for looks.
Playmobil Evil Knight 3315
You may pay a few dollars more for this set than you would for ones in the Add On section but you are getting your moneys worth. The detail is spot on and impressive, right down to the jagged dragon horns on the helmet, logo on the shield and cover, slightly evil expression on his face and snap on face protectors for the horse. To say that this set is made up for just a horse and knight is to really under value it. This is one of the darkest sets that I have seen come from Playmobil; even when compared to the new Barbarian figures or the Barbarian King. In a lot of ways it reminds me of the costumes and horse gear featured in the King Arthur film; think Lancelots horse and Arthurs clothing. Most of the outfit and gear are black with silver accents but there is a little bit of royal blue here and there; most notably on the outline of the shield, knights trim and logo on the horse cover. And while I am on that subject; this is not a sweeping cover meaning that it doesnt have a lot of movement to it. Its made of a softer plastic that has a little bit of give to it but it doesnt have any give to it when you move the horse around.
When I got this set in the mail there was one thing that I didnt like about it; the drop down portion of the face mask looked a little off in blue so I swapped it out with a silver one that came with another knight. This is one of the really nice things about the whole Playmobil series; you can mix and match pieces to create something that really is unique. The knight sits in the saddle evenly and doesnt fall out or tip over. About the only time you may have a little trouble is when you have the knight holding the double blade ax [or axe depending on how you spell it]; if he in on horseback hes pretty stable but if he is standing up, he could fall over easily. Add a little bit of poster putty to the bottom of his feet to keep him from falling over or just keep him in the saddle. You can have the knight on display off the horse and he looks just as great as when he is mounted; that means you are getting to exceptional looking pieces for under six dollars. This set is suggested for kids ages six and older because of the sharp pieces like the horns on the helmet and the ax. The blades arent sharp but if a wee person gets a hold of this they could do a little bit of damage to pets and eyeballs.
This figure would be a great pick for anyone that collects Playmobil figures or is into any of the medieval themes that they have on the market. While I really love this figure and his horse hes a one of a kind piece so it is hard to have him on the same shelf as the other knights because hes so visually overpowering compared to the others. If you want to try to even things out I highly suggest checking out the Dragon Troops set ; this one comes with some really nice looking knights and a horse with red tournament cover. The design or logo on the shields is almost the same as the ones featured in the Knights Weapons [also called Knights Accessories] so if you pick up that Add On set you can mix and match the pieces so that they all have a common theme to them. Since the Evil Knight has a mostly black color to the outfit and horse gear, you can use the color tie in with the Dragon Troops set to create your own little evil army.
Most of the stand alone figures in the Special and Pals series had a suggested retail price of $2.99 - $3.99. This one sells for $5.99 or more depending on where you are shopping. Because it comes with a horse, tournament cover and weapons you are paying more for it but it is worth it. There are a lot of perks with this set and I didnt feel that it was over priced. I wouldnt pay more than $7.99 for this so if you see it listed for more than that, shop around or hit the Playmobil Online Store. I did have to wait a while for this to come back into stock but it was definitely worth it.
The Bottom Line
Playmobil has a lot of great figures that you can use with the Viking, Knight and Castle sets as well as those that can be found in their Add On, Pals and Special sections of the site. I am really hoping that they add some more evil characters to the line up; hes a really nice looking figure and adds that dark element to any scene. Hes a little overpowering when placed next to other knights because of the tournament cover for the horse and his almost all black outfit but I look at it this way, theres only one of him. If there were a whole army of dark or evil knights then having them on display might be an issue. For the price you are getting a really nice horse and knight with some cool weapons. Since there arent any other evil figures out, the Dragon Warrior and the Warrior With Wolf are two that go great with this one but again, he is going to overpower pretty much any other figures because of the outfit and horse.
