| Freak369's Full Review: Playmobil Farmer's Barn |
If someone would have told me that I would be sinking money into Playmobils 1-2-3 line of building and creative play toys I would have laughed at them. These are designed for kids between the ages of a year and a half to about five so I will give you three guesses as to who wanted this set. Thats right, little Miss Annabelle. When we were doing some clothes shopping [and this girl can power shop with the best of them] she spotted some Playmobil stuff in the toy aisle at Marshalls and had to go investigate. She was into the Duplo stuff for a while but quickly got into the Lego Belville series when someone made a comment that the Duplo line was for little kids. That didnt stop her from checking out the Playmobil 1-2-3 sets that they had on clearance. We picked up a few sets for her to play around with and even though the boxes were a little worn out the pieces were all there and the inner packaging was all intact.
Playmobil 1-2-3 Farmers Barn
I got into collecting the Playmobil figures when one of the boys spotted some of the stranger ones when we lived in San Diego. I wasnt really that impressed with them to start with but got hooked on the creepy and spooky ones. Over the past few years Ive gotten a lot of the individual pieces from the Special and Pals lines so I guess I cant be too hard on Annabelle for wanting to get a couple of the 1-2-3 sets. The nicest thing about this is that the figures and animals in these sets are large and chunky so even the youngest of kids can get a firm grip on them, The people / figures in the sets have a very close resemblance to the ones that you find in the regular Playmobil sets but most of them dont come with accessories since these could very easy present a choking hazard.
The Farmers Barn is a very nice set up that has an impressive collection of animals, barn complete with a ladder and of course the farmer himself. This is a great set to invest in if you have a younger child that likes to play with animals and it can be very educational as well. You can teach them the animal noises, what they eat, what they do on the farm and if you are so inclined, pick up some of the add on sets of other animals. A nice one to add to this is the Girl And Horse [6723] or the Farmer And Cow [6724]. Since this set comes with brown cow you might want to get the one in the Farmer And Cow set because it is white with brown spots and looks so freakin cute! One of the sets that I did order through the website [couldnt find it in any store] was the Farmer With Tractor [6715]. If you want to have a fully functional farm then this set is a must have!
I was really impressed with the animals that came with this set. They are all extremely cute, detailed and really add a lot to the replay value. You get a portly pink pig, gray striped cat, Jersey cow [brown with spots] black dog with white spots, white horse with gray spots [it even has a saddle on it] and a white duck. Well, I am assuming that this is a duck - its white and has its wings outstretched. Its a bird of some type so for the sake of labeling it, well just call it a duck. There is no set place for the animals to be but there are a couple of fence sections that you can arrange to pen them in or fence them off from a part of the farm. There isnt enough space inside the bar to fit them all inside but you can put the smaller once inside the small workshed if you want. Again, maybe this isnt really a workshed but thats what it looks like to me.
The barn itself is pretty nice; there are two green doors in the back of it [or the front depending on how you are facing it] that swing open. You can use the ladder to make repairs on the roof or use it to climb into the loft to get some hay down for the critters. Everything in the set can be positioned on the locking grid. This is sort of like a Lego base plate but instead of round pegs, these are square. You get a small bush with a stenciled butterfly on it as well as a large tree. Its these small touches that really add a lot to the set and make it worth the suggested retail value. There are some small non distinct pieces that come with the set - a few long blocks that can be used a hay bails or feed troughs, a large jug shaped piece and a small roost for birds. I think these were added so kids could have some fun thinking up different ways to use them.
Price
We found this set at Marshalls for $10.00 and I couldnt pass up getting it once I saw all the stuff that was in it. I started looking online for the going price on this and it was between $22.00 and $35.00 depending on the site. Getting it for less than half the asking price is always a sweet deal but it was nothing compared to the hours that Annabelle spent playing with this. She was a little worried that the boys were going to make fun of her for playing with the set but they were more than cool about it. Marshalls and TJ Maxx are both great places to find Playmobil toys for a lot less than the suggested retail price. The boxes may be a little worn but as long as it is still sealed, chances are you will get everything thats supposed to be in the set.
The Bottom Line
Annabelle had an awesome time playing with this and even though she might be a little too old for it, she is a sucker for animals. The last time I saw her playing with it she told me that the cow had a cold, the pig was being a little bossy and the dog and the cat were fighting. I wanted to wait and see if she was really into this set before I ordered more of the 1-2-3 items from the add on line that Playmobil offers. When she saw some of the farm related things at the website she had me in hysterics. She didnt say anything, she just pulled out a piece of paper and started writing down the set numbers. Be sure to check out the Playmobil Online Store for more items from the 1-2-3 line as well as other educational and early learning toys that they offer. This set is designed for kids that are a year and a half and older but I would keep an eye on the ladder, if a smaller child gets a hold of it, they can and will use it as an implement of doom to torture other kids or family pets.
