| Freak369's Full Review: Playmobil Gold Dragon Leader |
If theres one thing I can count on from the Playmobil company its add-on sets that can really enrich kids playtime and prompt them to use their imagination and creative side. With that being said, most of the sets that I purchase are for my own little collection with only a few of them being picked off by the brood to use in their small but ever growing castle scene. They are die hard Lego fans but over the past few years opened up to other building block series such as Playmobil and Mega Blok, this isnt something that came easy for them but they couldnt pass up the Mega Bloks Alien Agency Freaky Fill Up. As soon as they started to get into the smaller Playmobil sets and collecting the Special figures I started picking up a few of the rarer ones for myself. This snowballed into something I never expected, over fifty figures lining the edges of my desk and slowly giving the Lego figures a real run for their money. While I have no doubt in my mind that the Playmobil ones will always take a backseat to the Lego ones, things are starting to get a little crowded here.
Playmobil Gold Dragon Leader 7672
One of the first things you might notice about this figure is the colors that are used; some of the knights are so basic and borderline boring so when I saw this little guy clad in black and purple there was no doubt in my mind that I had to get him. The dark purple works well with the black outfit and gold dragons featured on the shield and on his torso; the detail on the dragon is simply incredible but you do lose a little of it when you look at it on the torso rather than on the shield. I would have rather had this figure clad with a round shield rather than a triangular crest shaped one but hey, Ill sacrifice that for some cool colors and gold dragon design any day. The downside to this set is that it only comes with one weapon, a mid sized gray sword that can be clipped into either hand or used with one of the larger sets in the armory. There is a thin brown belt with the figure and I promptly removed it from the figure because the color really didnt work with the purple and black theme. Be warned, once you remove the belt it can be a little hard to get back on him since you need to slip it over this waist to get it off. Some of the belts can be fastened or unfastened however this one is a solid piece.
The silver accents on the cuffs are pieces that need to be added once you start building the figure, these are the smallest pieces and can easily become lost or swallowed by a child so be sure to keep these types of figures out of the reach of the smaller kids. These can be left off the figure if you want to preserve the color flow of black and purple but in my opinion they help give him a little flare and tie in the color of the sword. Outside of the dragon stenciling on the torso, the figure is one solid color purple. Most other knights have some type of stenciled chainmail or protective garb but this one has the simple two color body that really works well. The functional helmet has a drop down face sleeve and is accented with a purple plume on top. The plume piece will need to be attached to the helmet and once affixed its a pretty tight fit but it can and will come apart if a child starts to pick at it. Again, just like the wrist cuffs, this is a piece that can easily be swallowed.
Thing To Know
• Since 99% of the Playmobil sets are all of the same scale [barring the 1-2-3 series pieces] it is extremely easy to mix and match the various body parts, accessories and weapons to create new and unique figures. This helps to increase the replay value of the toy, prompt your child to use his or her imagination and helps to stretch your toy dollar.
• You can find this set at places that have a large toy section but Ive had the best luck finding these at my local Target store. You can pick it up at the Playmobil Online Store for $2.99, a dollar more than what Target charges. This is a common thing with the Special and Pals series, they are $2.99 at the website and $1.99 at the retail stores. Go figure, its usually the reverse.
The Bottom Line
If you have a child that is into the castle or knights series from Playmobil, this makes a great addition even if you stick with this one and skip the three knight add on pack. So far Ive had nothing but fun with this figure and it looks great on display with the on the knights that Playmobil has put out in the past. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to boost your knight count, pick up a cool weapon or add the gold dragon image to your army, this is definitely a set you will want to keep your eyes peeled for. The whole knight series is worth checking out but it can get a bit expensive for the larger sets so these smaller individual ones are a great way to expand without having to invest a huge chunk of money into it. Be sure to check out the Playmobil website for other sets in the castle and knights series as well as new additions to the Special / Pals series. With the holidays right around the corner, these also make for great stocking stuffer items!
