Fear Not M’Lady, I’m Your Knight In Somewhat Shining Armor! Playmobil Green Dragon Fighter

Written: Jun 04 '03 (Updated Nov 16 '04)
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Durability:
Pros:Part of the Playmobil Special figure series, removable gear, nice helmet and visor.
Cons:Hard to find, not much fun as a stand-alone set.
The Bottom Line: After going through a 12 Step Anger Management Program, this dragon fighter has been reformed. He no longer slays the dragons but peacefully co-exists with them atop my computer monitor.

I like to think of the Playmobil figures as a primer to Lego figures. They have moveable joints, most come with accessories and encourage creative playtime. When I came across the Playmobil Special figures a few of them tugged at my heartstrings and I had to get them. Having a true passion for dragons, castles and all things medieval, when I saw this little guy sitting on the shelf in the badly banged up box I couldn’t help but toss him in the cart. Now, being a Lego fanatic I have to say this – I won’t be giving up my Lego sets anytime soon to pursue collecting Playmobil sets but there are some that I just can’t resist. Any time a toy can expand a childs mind and let them create scenes and stories using their imagination it gets extra points with me. Even though my boys have long since outgrown the appeal of the Playmobil sets, they’ll still drag them out and play with them when younger kids come over for a visit.

Playmobil Green Dragon Fighter

Standing about three inches tall, this very colorful little figure is sure to please anyone into medieval lore, knights and dragons. Most of the time you expect to see a "knight in shining armor", in this case he’s in a green uniform [that goes great with the Knights Starter Set] with a matching green and gold shield and gold tone sword. The accented shoulders are made to look like the arches on a dragons back and match up well with the larger dragons in the Knights series – so the designers are very much into continuity when they are planning out the smaller sets and accessory figures. This is important when you are a hard-core collector and want to get the most for your money as well as ending up with a series that looks great when mixed together.

I had hoped that the lighter green portions of the knight would glow in the dark but I was nixed. I took it upon myself to paint on some glow in the dark t-shirt paint around the edges of the shield as well as on the knight and the end result was a lot better than I expected. Since the paint dries clear I wasn’t too worried about making the modification – if it turned out looking bad, at least I wouldn’t have to see it until I turned out the lights. Unlike the Lego figures, the knee joints aren’t moveable on the Playmobil dragon figurer but he has so many nice details that this gets overlooked. The golden plume in his removable helmet is one of the many perks but I have to admit – he looks a bit ‘boring’ when the helmet is removed. The shield has a green double dragon image on it that really compliments the green used on the knight. So far the figure has stood up to a fair amount of use without showing any signs of wear. Unlike some of the Lego elements, the Playmobil accessories don’t need special handling since they are larger and usually a bit sturdier.

I have my little green dragon slayer on top of my computer monitor with a few other Playmobil figures including the Playmobil Fireman. I had a real issue with the Playmobil figures falling over due to their small feet and the fact that [to the best of my knowledge] Playmobil doesn’t make base plates for the figures to stand on. I solved this by shoving some small pieces of poster putty into the holes in the feet and smashing it in to place. This is a safe and non-permanent way to secure your figures and toys without having to worry about it effecting or compromising the item. The poster putty peels off and can be reused over and over again and is a must have for any small toy collector that take pride in displaying their goods.

Things To Know

This isn’t the only dragon / medieval related figure available in the Playmobil Special series. You can also pick up the Knight In Armor [4602], Dragon [3840], Court Jester [4610] and later in the year you’ll be able to pick up the Blue Knight [4616]. There are other dragon and castle sets available from Playmobil and if you want to check them all out, visit their official website at www.playmobil.com. If you really want to improve the look of your dragon slayer you can pick up the Knights Accessory pack for about $6.00 – it includes armor pieces, assorted weapons, flags, shields and more. These pieces will work with any of the Knights, Magic or Viking sets however some of the pieces are small so be careful with the little kids and these add on accessory sets.

The Bottom Line

This nifty little dragon slayer has settled in nicely on top of my computer monitor and so far there haven’t been any major battles between the Lego dragons and this green slayer. I consider this a great bargain for $1.00 but chances are if I’d seen this one when it was priced at $1.99 or $2.99 I would have picked it up and added it to my collection. This is a must have piece if you collect Playmobil figures or have any of the Playmobil Castle, Knights or Magic series. Since the scale seems to be the same from set to set [at least the ones that we own] mixing and matching them shouldn’t be an issue.
