Playmobil 'Princess With Unicorn': A Fantasy Themed Set That Any Princess Would Kill For

Written: Jul 8, 2008
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Durability:
Pros:Great add-on set, inexpensive, great for Fairy Tales, Castle or Princess themes.
Cons:Unicorn horn, hard to find locally.
The Bottom Line: Unicorns are supposed to be happy .. aren't they?

If you have a girl that is into Playmobil, unicorns or any type of building set, this is a great item to check out. Not only do you get two well designed figures in the set but it's affordable with most stores, online and retail, selling it for under $3.50. I started off with just a few Playmobil figures and the collection has gotten a little out of control; I didn't want the unicorn to be displayed with the figures because that would just open the door to other accessory type pieces being added to the shelves and that usually means a complete disaster when someone hits into it. Annabelle was more than happy to adopt the unicorn but I reserved the right to borrow it when needed.

Playmobil Princess With Unicorn 4645

First off, the name of it is wrong, dead wrong. It's listed by Playmobil as "Princess With Unicorn" [set 4645]. How did the name get so jacked up and why is it is listed incorrectly? Because things get added to the Epinions database from a number of sites and sometimes things that have one name in the United States have another name in another country. The set numbers are universal so it is always wise to make sure that you know it if you want to order something online. Otherwise you are taking a real risk because of the variations of the names. Someone might list it incorrectly accidentally or they might do it purposely and claim ignorance if you speak up or leave negative feedback.

This is part of the Pals and Special series from Playmobil; these sets were designed to be used as add-ons for those seeking to add figures or accessories to scenes or larger sets. I collect the figures so getting this was at the top of my list when it was added to the website. In some ways it was a waste because I already had the unicorn in a different color [the much coveted pink unicorn] and the princess came with one of the larger sets; even so, the colors were different so I had to order it. One thing that I love about it is the coloring of the princesses clothing; it's pink but not a really loud or obnoxious pink. The gold stenciled detailing works great with the bronze [not gold] crown / headpiece and that matches up perfectly with the coloring used on the unicorns tail and mane.

If you check out the unicorn from a distance it looks like any other unicorn but the closer you get to it, well, the darker it seems. Not in color mind you, in stance and composure. Mostly it’s the eyes, you half expect them so start glowing red. Maybe it’s the pale blue color that they used or the angle of the eye socket but this doesn't look like one of the cute, forest frolicking unicorns that you might see in an animated movie. The horn is long and there is a slight point to it; that means that not only is it dangerous but it is susceptible to breaking. One of the biggest cons is that the legs can't be moved; that is something that plagues a lot of different animals in the world of Playmobil so you can't give the unicorn low marks based solely on that. Annabelle used a metallic gold marker on the unicorn tail and mane to make it look a little more "glittery".

The Pals and Special sets were between $1.99 and $2.99 but sets like this would often cost a little more because there are two figures in it. You can order this from the Playmobil Online Store for $3.29 or you can try your luck at stores that carry other Playmobil sets. Paying $3.29 for a set like this is more than worth it if you want to add another figure to a scene or even if you just want or need another unicorn. If that is the case you might want to check the website for these sets as they can be a littler easier to get a hold of than ordering this set and trying to customize the unicorn or changing the entire color and appearance of it. Set 7941 "Unicorn With Foal" [$4.99], set 7783 "Pink Unicorn", set 7869 "Gold Unicorn" and set 7869 Light Blue Unicorn. The individual unicorns sell for $3.99 and are stocked year round at the website.

The Bottom Line

The brush that comes with the set is cute but it can be hard to get into the princesses hand. Its way too big to be used as a hair brush but if you have other horses or unicorns it can be used to groom them or add to a stable scene. I really love the color of the clothing and the overall appeal of the set, I just wish the unicorn wasn't a little on the creepy side. This is a great add on set for anyone that wants to add a bit of fantasy to a scene or if you are like me and collect the figures, you are getting two of them for the price of one.
