The Hunt For Eldorado Jo Continues With Playmobil’s “Sheriff”

Pros:Nice figure, funky pants, wanted poster.
Cons:Too much like the figure from the US Marshall set.
The Bottom Line: Reach for the sky ya wagon robbing cowboy!

As I mentioned in my review of the Playmobil U.S. Marshall, there are some sets that I’d never buy for myself or put at the top of my “must have” list; the western ones are interesting and fun to play with but unless you are into this type of stuff, chances are you’ll lose interest in them in rather short order. I made a trade with an eBay seller a few weeks ago and traded him five Hellraiser action figures for about thirty Playmobil sets; more than a fair trade on his part and he seemed more interested in getting the Hellraiser figures than making a profit on the Playmobil sets so everyone made out on the deal. The Sheriff set is almost exactly like the U.S. Marshall set and if you just compare the photos on the boxes or at the Playmobil Online Store you might not catch the small differences. The designers that worked on these sets did a great job with the detail and accessories but I really wish that they would have made the two figures a little more distinctive; as it stands now, if you have one set chances are you won’t need the other one unless you are like me and like to try to get all the figures in a series or in a theme. There are about 75 sets that I have on a list that I am hoping to get for my collection and these two weren’t even close to making the list – but getting them for “free” I couldn’t pass up getting these.

Playmobil Sheriff 7661

The Sheriff set is a nice small add-on set that can easily be blended in with the western or cowboy themed series from Playmobil. Buying these smaller sets is the easiest way to get accessories and extra figures without having to invest a large amount of money into the sets that are mid sized and over twenty dollars. This set was part of the Special series for a while but was also sold as a standard set within the western series. Some might call this a bare bones type of set since it only has one figure and a few accessories but that’s the beauty of it – for about two dollars you get something that can really increase the overall replay value of a mid sized set or in my case, take you one step closer to completing a collection. While I was happy to get another western figure to balance things out, there aren’t a lot of differences between the Sheriff and Marshall, the only real physical difference is the pants; the Marshall has solid colored pants and the Sheriff has a dark blue and gray pinstripe design. Outside of that, the two figures are identical. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with the Sheriff but if you want to get the most for your money, spend the extra dollar and get the Marshall, extra guns and rocking chair. He is a good looking figure but the yellow hair does make him look a little strange, his beard and moustache does obscure most of his face and it is a necessary piece to have on him if you want him to wear his hat.

The rifle that comes with this set is a little nicer than the one that comes with the U.S. Marshall set, it’s brown with black and silver accents and can be clipped into the figures hand. You have to position it a certain way to avoid having it tip over but other than that, it is a great weapon. The two small pistols that come with the set are glossy jet black, some people on the Playmobil chat boards have said that they received sets that had five pistols in their sets so it seems to be the luck of the draw [no pun intended] as to how many you get – two or five. The holster / belt that comes with the figure can be removed if you wish to do so however it is a little tricky to get back on him so think long and hard about whether or not you want to remove it. Overall the figure is nice, has the usual joint movements [hear, arms, wrists, waist] and comes with some nice accessory pieces. For two dollars you really do get your moneys worth from it but if you want to go the extra mile, spend another dollar and get the Marshall set. Regardless of which set you choose, both come with the white plastic “wanted” poster, a great little piece that really adds a lot to the figure.

The Bottom Line

If you are interested in picking up this set you will have the best luck looking at Target for it, they sell for about two dollars there however if you can’t find one locally, the Playmobil Online Store sells them for $2.99. I purchased mine from a vendor at eBay but this can be a risky proposition since some sellers will charge you more for shipping than what the set is actually worth. You also take a chance in getting a set that’s open or missing pieces, something that some sells “forget” to mention when listing the items. Overall this is a great littler set for those who are into cowboys or wild west themes and it’s a great inexpensive way to add another figure to the line up without having to spend a ton of money in the process. This does have a “four and older” warning on it due to some of the smaller pieces that come with the set so use your own judgment when picking out toys for your child. These guidelines exist to provide a basic warning of potential choking hazards but you know your child better than the toy manufacturers.
