| Freak369's Full Review: Playmobil Special Sea Robber |
I doubt I will ever be done with my Playmobil figure collection, especially when I keep finding great sets tucked away on the disorganized shelves at Target. When the brood started getting into the Playmobil caste and knights sets I started taking an interest in the figures, usually sold for a few dollars and poorly stocked at most retail stores, the Pals and Special series are a great way to increase the number of figures and accessories you have for scenes and you can have just as much fun mixing and matching the pieces as you can with the larger sets. This one was found on a recent trip to my local Target store and as I mentioned, was found on one of the cluttered shelves behind other Playmobil and Lego sets. Im not sure if someone put them there to hide them until they could return to purchase them or if a clerk just wanted to get out of blocking and facing the boxes what ever the reason, I benefited from it. Scanning at $1.99 a box, I started tossing them in the cart knowing that there was a 99% chance that they would be selling for a dollar more at the Playmobil Online Store.
Playmobil Sea Robber
Also known as Captain Peg-Leg and Pirate Captain
If you are a pirate lover or know someone that is, consider this a must have set to find and purchase. The captain comes complete with a stenciled red and gray striped shirt, tucked under a nice dark blue jacket with silver faux buttons that match the detailing on the belt. The red snap on cuffs that go around his wrists are a nice accent and can easily be swapped out with white or gray ones from other sets if you want to change the overall look. Without a doubt the hat has to be my favorite piece from this set, a true captains hat with a silver stenciled skull on the front, this is an impressive piece. While you can have it facing either way [skull on one side, blank on the other], the skull really adds a lot of flair to the captain. The peg leg [right leg] is not removable so trying to turn this into another type of figure or using the body for something else is pretty much out of the question. Since the bottom of the peg is about half the size of a normal Playmobil foot, this figure does tend to tip over a lot if theres vibration or movement. To solve this, apply a small amount of poster putty to the bottom of the figure so it doesnt wobble and knock over other figures. The facial detail of the figure is almost completely blocked by the big bushy brown beard piece that slides over his head before you place the hat on him, you cant skip this step or the hat will just fall off. The beard and hair pieces are separate and in some boxes these were already on the head peg and in others they needed to be assembled.
My only problem with this set was the parrot; its made up of two pieces, red wings that snap on the green body. There is also a small T that the bird can rest on but it isnt a necessary item unless you want the captain holding it in his hand rather than docked on his hat. The first box I opened was perfect, all the pieces were in the small plastic bag and putting it together was a complete snap, when I went to open another box to get another gun I noticed that the bird was missing and after checking the bag and box again, the small T mount that the bird sits on was also missing. This wasnt really a big deal to me because the bird isnt why I purchased it but I did send contact Playmobil about this and they offered to send me a new set, I declined since the bird wasnt going to be used but it is nice to know that they do stand behind their products 100%. Regardless, the parrot is very cute, has a good bit of etched detail to it and can be used with a ton of different sets, themes and series. The gun that comes with this set is a nice accessory but I would have thought that a captain would have been packing something a little bigger or at the very least a gun and sword. It can be held in either hand or used in other sets on belts or in armories.
Things To Know
Just like the Playmobil Pirate And Skull set, this one went through a slight revision when Playmobil started converting the Special line to the Pals line. Everything about this set is identical except the name on the box and the series that it is sold under. To further complicate things, Playmobil released this set as the Pirate Captain [7668] in their Pirate series its the same exact set. After doing a lot of digging and making a few phone calls I got to the bottom of this little dilemma. The Captain Peg-Leg set is the European release, some of which made it to America. The Sea Robber set is the one that was released for the Pals series and shares the same set number with the European version. The Pirate Captain is the newest version of the figure and is the only one that is still listed at the Playmobil Online Store. Rest assured, no matter what the set is called, what number it carries or series it belongs to its all the same set. The photo shown with this listing is how it [the box] looked in the Special series, the Pals version is a lot nicer looking, to take a look at it, check out this URL [www.collectobil.com/catalogue/items/4548upd1.htm].
The Bottom Line
Since there are so few pirate figures to collect in this format, getting this one was a no brainer. It looks great next to the Pirate And Skull set and makes for a great addition to the larger pirate themed play sets. This is a great way to boost the number of Playmobil figures you have for a scene but unless you plan on having multiple ships or swapping out the accessories, you might not have much use for more than a few captains. Since you can mix and match the pieces within the Playmobil sets you can change this little guy around a bit to suit your needs but you might have a little trouble getting around that peg leg of his. If you are going to try and order this online make sure you are going to be getting the set that you want, the variations in the names and set numbers are confusing and if ordering online through a careless vendor, it could be a complete disaster.
