| Rose66's Full Review: Playskool 1-2-3 High Chair |
When I was expecting our fourth child five years ago, our current (at the time) highchair was ready to be taken to the landfill and we were in need of a new one. I did quite a bit of looking around before deciding on the Playskool 1-2-3 highchair and was very pleased to have received it for my very first baby shower just before the baby was born! (imagine that...all those kids and hadn't had a baby shower before!)
The reasons I chose the Playskool 1-2-3 highchair over all the others that were offered in 1995 were many;
1. It has a wide base to help prevent tipping over when my baby or toddler becomes a tad too rambunctious while my back is turned. As many parents of young, active children know, that half a minute of having one's back turned is all that's usually needed for a disaster to occur!
2. It has a padded seat and wrap-around back rest. Having had many nights where our little one would fall asleep during the dinner hour at the table with the family, this was a huge plus to me!
3. The padded seat can be removed to get all of those "yuckies" out that always manage to fall down there when my son feeds himself.
4. The tray needs only one hand to open and close. That way I didn't have to set down my child, remove the tray, then go CHASE my child to get him into his highchair to eat his meal!
5. The tray is very deep and can hold many sipper cups of liquids before overflowing. Of course, that never meant that once my son would spill his sipper cup of milk/Kool-Aid/juice, etc, that he would actually leave it sitting there without splashing it all over the wall next to him!! :o) Oh, the colors our walls have seen...!
6. The seat can be reclined or sit up straight. The reclining position made it easier for me to feed my son when he was young and unable to sit himself up yet. I was also able to put him in his highchair so he could watch his three older brothers play nearby while I made dinner each night.
7. The seat is also height adjustable to 6 positions. That way it can be used as a highchair with tray, without the tray but pushed up to the dining table or as a toddler chair when down low. I haven't had the chance to use it in that capacity yet because once my son outgrew it for use as a highchair his little sister came along!
8. The MOST important reason that I chose this particular highchair over all the others is the ingenious solid plastic bar that goes between the child's legs and helps to prevent escaping or accidentally slipping out. Even though I had always used our previous highchair's seatbelt, I actually had many escaping acts and one or two accidental "slipping out and getting stuck" occurrences happen! It always seemed that my boys were very good at getting out of their highchair's seatbelt no matter how tight I got them or how well I watched them! Neither of my two children who have used this highchair has ever managed to get out of it themselves.
The highchair also has a storage bin on the back of the seat which I have never found useful since we keep ours tucked away in the corner of our dining room.
In the length of time that we have had the Playskool 1-2-3 highchair it has had a recall on it's legs due to a defect that caused some highchairs to collapse. Playskool was very good in handling this recall and sent us a repair kit to use temporarily until we got a whole new set of legs which would prevent the problem from happening again.
After two years of use the seat pad had split and needed replacing. Unfortunately, I was not able to just get the seat pad and had to buy the seat AND back pads as a set. The back pad hasn't cracked yet so we have an extra one hanging around here now... Around the same time we had to replace the tray because the part that it attaches to the highchair with was too badly cracked for it to stay attached any longer. That happened because our son would happily kick the underside of the tray while eating and with enough kicks like that it would knock the tray right off the highchair!
I love this highchair and if I had to purchase another one today for my daughter, who is now in her second year of using this same highchair, I would get another Playskool 1-2-3 highchair.
