| figlet's Full Review: Playskool Kick Start Gym |
When my child was almost five months old and kicking up a storm, I purchased the Kick Start Gym. It is labeled infants and up. From the minute the baby saw it, he loved it!
It is a standing toy that has two settings - one is music only and the other is a wheel with colorful attachments that spin along with playing music. We only use the spinning and music as that is the most fun.
When the baby kicks the foot pedal, the wheel is activated. There are also two trapeze type attachments that hang down. By batting at these (a bird and a butterfly)the baby can activate the wheel and music. The bird and butterfly are also rattles.
It's a whole lot of action and noise, which my little guy loves. Oh, along with all the other "stuff", along the legs are more toys. There's a rail with a moving butterfly and two bees and also three colored flowers that can be stood up and pushed down.
Until about 6 and 1/2 months, this was the greatest toy and my son would be enthralled by it for hours. but as his legs got stronger, he started kicking the foot pedal and it began to stick. This happened constantly and was very annoying.
Later, the real danger began. At about 6 and 3/4 to 7 months, the baby started to kick at the trapeze toys and then the top of the 'gym', lifting the legs off the floor!
Also, after much use, the trapeze attachments can be pulled or kicked off there hooks. Though it can be annoying to have to keep reattaching them, they make good rattles!
Unfortunately, there is no weight in the legs to keep it on the floor, so when the baby kicked it up, the legs would land on his hand, arm, face, etc. He also tries use it to pull himself to a standing position. Of course he goes backward, along with the toy. Since he loves it so much, and I didn't want to take it away from him, I sit right with him whenever he plays with it.
I would say this is an excellent toy, but for children younger than 6-7 months. The box shows it as a toddler toy for sitting and batting at the trapeze attachments. Maybe it's just my son and he's a bit rambunctious, but I want to let other parents know about the dangers I found with this toys.
