| amy99rm's Full Review: Playtex Diaper Genie System |
Alright now there are all these reviews out here that, I think, aren't giving this wonderful device enough credit. This is a fabulous product!! What would we do without it!?! Our nurseries would smell and our babies would be unhappy. Let's be thankful that we don't have to live like that!!
Anyway, on to the meat and potatoes. This is how the fabulous Diaper Genie works (it's a little hard to explain). There is a plastic lining that you stick the dirty diapers in. You push the diaper into the plastic and it covers the diaper. Then you twist a ring that surrounds the opening of the Genie and it seals the plastic lining closed. So when you empty your Genie the diapers look like sausage links. Each one is individually sealed in plastic, which is the key to the Diaper Genie's success. I hope that explanation is understandable....
To empty the Genie you must cut this plastic lining loose so that the diapers can fall out with ease. Here is where a lot of people have a problem because the cutting mechanism isn't very sharp. However, I don't believe that it should be very sharp because, although the Genie has a "child and pet-proof" lid, toddlers could definitely get into this thing and could very well cut themselves. The Genie people don't make the cutting mechanism so sharp for this very reason! Let's remember who we're doing this for!!
Now the only real beef I have with the Genie is that you do need to purchase refills, which contain that plastic liner that is essential to the Diaper Genie's success. At about five bucks a pop, they do tend to get costly. But I've found a pretty good way around this problem. If you just throw the diapers that don't stink in a regular trash can and only use the Genie for the stinky diapers, you can cut your refill usage down a TON!!! I've been doing this for about a month now and it really helps.
I have heard things from parents of multiples about how the Diaper Genie can't take the heat with their family. Too many diapers too fast, they say. But I've been to their homes and their nurseries don't stink. They have tried my selective use technique and it seems to be working. Otherwise they would empty the Genie at least once a day. Normal families (i.e. - ONE baby at a time) should only have to empty the Genie every other day or so. Still beats running out to the garbage every time you change a diaper.
The appearance of the Diaper Genie is great, in my opinion. It doesn't look at all like a trash can. You can even buy covers for them (they run under $10 on EBay) to make them look even better. They are relatively small, and don't need anymore room to work. Just as long as you can open the lid, you're good. You may need one square foot of space to keep it in. Not bad, I think.
The Genie is made out of think plastic, so to clean it all I do it rinse the inside with a garden hose (usually right after I empty it) and wipe the outside with a damp cloth. Just a few minutes outside in the sun and it's ready to go again!
They are pretty durable, although I wouldn't go tossing it around or anything. And if the cutting mechanism doesn't work right the first time, then just keep trying. It will cut eventually. Or grab a pair of scissors. That's probably the easiest way...
Overall, I really think this is a great product. I challenge everyone who has given it a bad review to come up with a better system. I can't think of anything. It does the job: keeps the stink out! It's small, doesn't look bad, and is relatively easy to empty and clean. A necessity in every nursery!
