Pros: keeps the smell out, pets and children cannot open it easily
Cons: smells when emptying it, have to buy separate refills for it
The Bottom Line: Good at keeping the smell out. Recommended for use with poopy diapers only to cut cost of the refills.

| JMNS's Full Review: Playtex Diaper Genie System |
One thing I have come across in my role as a mother: People either hate the Playtex Diaper Genie or love it. There seems to be very few people out there that are neutral about it. As for me, I really like it and I will tell you why.
We lived in a small two bedroom condo for a few years. While pregnant with my daughter, I realized I needed to find a diaper pail as the outdoor garbage can was quite a hike to get to. The thought of having to run a stinky diaper out to the community garbage can in a torrential Pacific Northwest rainstorm, was less than appealing to me.
So I began my quest. I did not have a particular brand of diaper pail in mind, but one Saturday while out garage saling, I found an original Playtex Diaper Genie. So I decided to purchase it as it was only $2. I would have never plopped down the $25- 30 for it in the store as I am frugal about certain things, but none the less, I was excited for this find.
I took it home, cleaned it up a bit and began examining it as to how it worked. It only took me about 5 -10 minutes to figure it out. Once you have it figured out, it is a snap to use and in my opinion, not very complicated.
First, You lift up the pale pink lid, and then lift up the round lid inside of that and place the diaper down in the cavity- just far enough to where it "catches" within the neck of the Genie. You don't want to push it all the way down into the bottom as this will make it difficult to twist off later. Next, you replace the round lid, give it a full twist to seal off the diaper and close the top pink lid. Piece of cake. To empty the Genie, lift the pale pink lid again. There is another circle within the round lid that has a cutter. Twist the smaller inner circle one full rotation to cut the continuous bag. You then lift the round lid out and tie off the portion that was cut into a knot. At this point, I usually tie a new knot in the continuous bag to start a new line for the next load of diapers.
The final step is to release a button at the base of the Diaper Genie and open up the bottom. VOILA! A huge sausage link of smelly diapers. O.k. I admit, this is the only thing I don't like about it. But come on, what diaper pail doesn't stink when you are emptying it? I guess that is why I "allow" my husband to do the honors.
Changing the refill in and out of the Genie is a snap as well. Just lift the large white lid- basically the top of the Genie, pull out the old one, pop the new one in. Pull out enough liner to tie it off and push it down in the cavity a ways and you are set!
Overall, it is a good product. The Genie keeps the smell of the diapers out until you have to empty it. We only go through a refill about every 2 1/2 months or so. But we also use our Playtex Diaper Genie for the poopy diapers only and only have to empty it once a week. The regular wet diapers go straight into the garbage can. This has helped us save some money on refills. The genie refills run between $4.50 and $5.50 - depending on where you buy them at. The Original Playtex Diaper Genie will hold up to approximately 20 diapers before you have to empty it. I am told that the newer Diaper Genie will hold more than that. It also has a wider opening, although I have never had problems with the opening on my Original Diaper Genie being too small.
I like it and recommend it if you have pets or other children as it is difficult to open the top lid. I also recommend just using it for the messy diapers. You will save yourself a lot of money and time if you just put the regular wet diapers into the garbage can.
