| ValerieG's Full Review: Playtex Spillproof Cup |
The Playtex Spillproof Cup has saved many carpets and rugs in our house. We first discovered this wonder-cup when my little girl went through her, "I must spill my milk at all times," phase. When we would use standard sippy cups with her, she would delight in turning her cup upside down, spilling the drink. When we got these cups, that game quickly lost it's appeal. Our middle child is just finishing the spillproof cup stage, and we have yet to have a major league spill with these cups.
There are two sizes of cups...what we call Tall-one and Shorty. Shorty is perfect for the 12-24 month stage, when a full cup is just too much to handle. The tall cup works fine for the older children who still tend to have spills, yet can also drink more. The cups are made out of 3 pieces: the plastic cup (many of which have designs such as beach scenes, fish, trains and balls), a screw-on lid with 2 holes on the inside, and a 2 plug rubber stopper. Back in the "old days," the stopper was a hard rubber with spring-like things in the stopper, but the new models are just a single piece flexible stopper. I prefer the newer style because they are easier to push into the holes in the lids. You fill the cup with the drink, put the stopper in the lid, and screw the lid onto the cup. Simple and effective. The rubber stopper can be replaced if it becomes lost or damaged, although it is so sturdy that I've never had to replace one because of damage.
When the child drinks from the cup, the rubber stopper keeps the liquid in the cup. The child has to provide suction in order to drink. Once my children become capable of keeping their cups upright with a little effort, I remove the rubber stopper from the lid, so that they don't have to suck to drink. I still use the cups with the lids to save the carpets, though.
These are wonderful cups. I can't tell you how many times my carpets have been saved from potentially disastrous spills. I like the that you can use the cups in many different phases, from a toddler-teaching sippy cup all the way to a carpet saving cup for a preschooler. Finally, I like the fact that if my dishwasher decides to eat a rubber stopper, I can simply go to Wal Mart and buy another pack without replacing the entire cup.
