| modernmarvel's Full Review: Playtex the First Sipster Spill-Proof Cup |
I bought this cup a couple of months ago when my baby was eight months old. I put a sippy cup on her high chair tray at most meals. I don't expect her to drink from it yet but want her to get used to the idea.
The first cup we tried didn't have any handles. She played around with that cup and chewed a bit on the top but didn't really get the hang of sucking on it. Plus, the cup kept slipping out of her hands, which are particularly slippery at meal time. As a result, I decided to try a cup with handles to see if it would be easier for her to use.
WHAT YOU GET
I was attracted to this sippy cup because it has handles. This cup comes in a lot of various bright colors. The top has a spout that must be sucked on to release liquid. When assembled properly, the cup has been leak proof.
The handle has two large handles on it for baby to grasp while she uses the cup. The cover is hard plastic. My only complaint about the lid is that the rubber piece inside the cover that prevents leaks sometimes comes out in the dishwasher. Once I gave the cup to the baby without realizing that the rubber piece was missing. We ended up with a very wet baby and she managed to soak an entire corner of the kitchen as well.
The bottom of this sippy cup is just a plastic cup. Ours is translucent pink plastic. I like the fact that I can see through the cup to tell how much liquid is in there.
OUR EXPERIENCE
When baby was eight and nine months old, I put the cup on her high chair tray during meals. The first time she saw it, she played with it and knocked it around a bit. After a few more attempts, she gnawed on the top part of the cup. She also enjoyed using the handles as teethers and spent more time with the handles in her mouth than the spout. She doesn't have any teeth so the counter pressure was probably very soothing. After many tries over a couple of months, she still hadn't moved away from teething on the handles and didn't really show a lot of interest in the spout.
Baby did find it easy to grasp the handles. However, she couldn't really understand or master the wrist action necessary to flip the cup toward her mouth with the appropriate angle for liquid to flow into the spout. She did raise the cup to her mouth, but wouldn't angle it appropriately. She didn't have this problem with a cup that had no handles. For some reason, maybe because they are more like her bottle, she turns those cups up so the liquid flows into the spout.
WASHING
We have washed this cup many times in the top rack of the dishwasher. As I mentioned above, a couple of times the rubber piece inside the lid has fallen out. It hasn't fallen on the heating element in the dishwasher but, if it did, that would probably be the end of the cup. Once it falls out, it is easy to stick back in. Otherwise, the cup has stood up to the dishwasher pretty well.
PRICE
I paid $4.99 for this cup in CVS.
AGE RANGE
According the manufacturer, this is a training cup meant for smaller babies.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I don't think we are going to stick with this sippy cup. The handles seem to distract baby from the spout. Also, there is that problem with the rubber piece that falls out and, during my busy days, I don't have time for quality control problems. Fishing around on the bottom of the dishwasher for that rubber piece is a bummer. All in all, I can't recommend this cup. The design is right for our baby.
