Pros:Economical; laid back gaming floor; live bingo games

Cons:Older surroundings

The Bottom Line: As long as you set your expectations appropriately, The Plaza is a decent place to eat and sleep in downtown Las Vegas.

As long as you set your expectations accordingly, The Plaza can be an economical and clean place to rest your head at night, especially if that's all you really expect your hotel room in Vegas to provide.

Even if you've never been to Las Vegas, you may have already seen the distinctive circular driveway of The Plaza Hotel in the background on TV shows such as CSI. Like most of the downtown Las Vegas area, The Plaza has quite a bit of history behind it, which is also a nice way of saying that it's quite old.

The Plaza is also the only casino downtown that offers live bingo games, along with surprisingly large bingo tournaments three times a year. That alone should indicate the more senior clientele the The Plaza appeals to. That's not a bad thing, as the slower, more laid back feeling in the casino makes gambling almost relaxing (assuming you're winning, of course).

There was a good assortment of slot machines on the gaming floor, with the penny machines making up a majority of the newer machines available. One note: they recently closed the live keno, so if that's your game, you'll need to check out the Cal or the Fremont.

In terms of dining options, there is a small food court that offers a McDonalds, a Seattle's Best coffee shop, and pizza. The buffet in the middle of the casino had a surprisingly good breakfast assortment with not-too-soggy waffles, strawberry and blueberry toppings, and frozen vanilla custard being some of the best I've had downtown. There is an Italian restaurant on the second floor, which I did not try.

My room in the South Tower was relatively clean and spacious. The only minor problems were a tub that was slow to drain and an overwhelming smell of Febreze when I first opened the door. Again, don't expect five-star (or even three or four star) quality in terms of the bedding materials or the appearance of the bathroom and you'll be fine.
