Pleasure Drivers - It's my pleasure, to bash this mess of a movie.
Written: Mar 21 '10
Pros:A neat ending.
Cons:Pretty much everything that came before that neat ending.
The Bottom Line: This movie is a mess. With a flawed script, and some really inconsistent characters, this movie shouldn't be seen by anyone.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
This is one seriously bad movie. From start to finish, this movie is nothing more than a bunch of scenes designed to shock the audience, with nothing in its favor except a decent premise and a few darkly humorous scenes. I'm talking about Pleasure Drivers, a film that tries to be very edgy. Too bad, it fails. It's one of those movies with multiple story lines that you know will converge at some point. There's Daphne, the nurse (Lauren Holly) who genuinely cares for her patient Tom, a young man who suffered massive head trauma in his teens. But Daphne can't afford to put food in their mouths or even renew Tom's medications. When Daphne discovers that a corrupt church is actually scamming funds that are owed to Tom for his disability, she goes off the deep end and concocts a kidnapping scheme designed to get the church to pay up. She even tries to get her cousin (Meat Loaf) to help. But absolutely nothing goes according to her plan. In a completely unrelated story, an OCD-ridden professor just found out that his wife has left him - for another woman. The professor takes off for a bit of a road trip, accompanied by a sexy student (Lacey Chabert). But neither one of them seems to be dealing with a full deck, if you know what I mean. In a third story, we have Marcy, a very angry lesbian (Jill Bennett). Her girlfriend just left her, leaving her in a very bad mood. She's also, apparently, a hit-woman. Rather than paying one penny of ransom, the church simply hires Marcy, to settle the kidnapping situation, in her own way. The three stories converge at the Big Cock Inn. Yes, that's what it's called. But what makes this movie so awful? Well, the dialogue for one. The language is over the top, and there are scenes that consist of nothing more than one character screaming at another, using language that will make some viewers cringe. There's the nonsensical aspects of some of the characters. Tom's mental health seems to vacillate depending on the director's mood at the moment. He can be practically comatose one moment, and fully functioning the next. Daphne flip-flops, too. She's cunning one moment and completely stupid the next. And there are scenes that are clearly designed to shock viewers. Like the lesbian scene at the very beginning of the movie. And the sodomy scene involving the professor. Neither scene is graphic, but the implications are quite clear. The performances were a mixed bag. Lauren Holly carries most of the movie, and I think she does a pretty good job. She shows us a woman who is just desperate. Trying to change for the better, trying to help her patient, but held back by her own demons. On the other hand, you have the professor who came off comical, rather than serious. And Meat Loaf, whose brief appearance was also a disappointment to me. There's only one part of this movie that I actually liked, and that was the ending scene. Despite its complete lack of logic, I thought it was a fitting ending to this disaster of a movie. Still, one five minute scene does not make up for the previous 90 minutes. Skip this one.
