| infielderx's Full Review: Plextor PlexWriter 24/10/40A CD-RW Burner |
There are those among us who desire to surf the web, listen to .mp3's, have a game of Quake 3 minimized, AND burn a greatest hits cd all at once. Most of us are S.O.L., because most cd burners aren't capable of doing so without buffer-underruns galore. Unless of course you have a shortage of coasters for your drinks.
As long as I have been into computers, I just recently jumped into the cd burner craze. My hard drive was overflowing with .mp3's, and I needed an alternative for storage. Being the impulsive shopper than I am known to be, I grabbed the Plexwriter 24/10/40A. Unlike my roommate, who is patient with his 8x writer, I must have my music burned in 4 minutes or less...and I don't want to have to do it twice.
I chose Plextor for it's solid name. They have been known for quality cd-rom drives since the early 90's. They have also been known for their high prices, but they have become more reasonable over the years. I found this particular drive for about $250, and it was just released. Naturally, a month later, the 40x writer came out. Oh, well.
I immediately made myself about 50 music cd's to clear up my hard drive. Not once has this thing made a dud. You should note, however, that the quality of the blank cd DOES matter; if you want it to be able to be played in any cd-player, be sure to get the name-brand recordable media. Beware those bargain-bin spindles of 50 cd's for under $30.
I find it also matters the program with which you use to copy games and/or music cd's. The bundled software (Plexmanager 2000, which doesn't run on XP) is too basic; I much prefer Nero burning ROM. It is much more user friendly and powerful to use, and runs much faster.
If you want quality and a solid name, choose Plextor. Their website is updated often, and they offer free firmware upgrades as soon as they are available.
