DrMirage's Full Review: Pokemon Stadium for Nintendo 64
Pokemon Stadium is the latest release in the Pokemon franchise that is sweeping the world. It seems that people all over can't get enough of the little creatures and their incredible make-believe world! Just like others, I was eagerly awaiting the release of this title, and now that I have it, I guess I have to write up my opinion of the game...here goes...
Well, the box is the first thing that catches your eyes, as it is about twice as thick as normal N64 cartridges, but this is because the game also includes a Nintendo 64 transfer pack that slaps onto the bottom of the N64 controller. Using this transfer pack, you are able to use Pokemon from your stable of characters in your (or your friends') GameBoy Yellow, Red or Blue Pokemon game cartridges. This is *highly* recommended as the "rental" Pokemon in the N64 cartridge may not have the skill to advance very far into the game. However, if you don't have the GameBoy cartridges, the game is still playable, but not as easy to progress.
The N64 cartridge itself is packed with things to do with your Pokemon. Ranging from a 1-player game to a multiplayer 4-player free-for-all tournament, there are even other types of games in the cartridge if you don't feel like fighting all the time. It may be these "other" games that will appeal to younger kids as they don't require any knowledge of Pokemon powers, strategy or defense. They do require, however, a good deal of button pressing, so I would suggest limiting the amount of time that young kids are exposed to the games.
An interesting area in the cartridge is the game where you can set your Pokemon to fight (in succession) *ALL* the gym leaders from the GameBoy Pokemon games. Staring with Brock and his lieutenants, you must try to go all the way to face the final four trainers and become the world's greatest Pokemon master. It takes quite a while, so save your games often!
Other than these interesting additions, this is really nothing more than a larger, colorized and more animated GameBoy cartridge, with Pokemon SNAP! added to the mix. Buy the game if you really have to, but if you wait awhile (around 3 months or so), the price will become so affordable, you'll think that Nintendo is giving away the game! That's exactly what I should have done...
