| jdrobinson's Full Review: Polar Accurex Plus |
The Polar Accurex Plus is a GREAT monitor. I have used a couple of other monitors and prefer the Accurex Plus. The other brands are cheaper and you can change the batteries yourself, but they never seem to last very long nor do they seem as accurate. Some monitors do not keep track of your heart rate throughout your workout -- they only tell you what your heart rate was when you are finished. You can set the Accurex Plus to make HR readings on minute, every 5 seconds, or in real time if you prefer. For distance running I have it take a measure at every minute. When I look at my workout I can see where I was in terms of heart rate throughout the run. By doing this I can see if a given reading was the result of a hill or how hard I was running. I run roads in a park and have the mile splits marked throughout the park. When I look at the time it took to run a mile and my heart rate and I can tell how I am doing compared to the previous week or the previous year. I download my workouts into my computer using the Plus Interface and keep my splits and heart rate for practically all my runs and races. It is a great tool for running long distance races. I can see what my splits were for each mile in a marathon and see what my heart rate was at that time. Very useful. I have not experienced any problems with the monitor picking up other runners heart rates (there is a way to insure this won't happen but I have never bothered). You can put the watch near the chest strap and and it automatically turns on the light and shows you the time. Having a clock as well as a stopwatch is very handy when you need to get home by a certain time too.
The Accurex Plus has a ton of features. You can set it to insure you train within a certain range of effort (e.g., go easy on your easy days and hard on those lactate threshold training days). I also like the recovery feature. I set mine to keep track of my recovery heart rate for 5 minutes after I finish running and cooling down.
There are many new models and I haven't tried them. But I would not buy another brand. Service has been excellent. You send it to them to change the battery but they have been fast and my HRM always works. I bought the Accurex plus so I could download my workouts. If that is not an issue, the older Accurex (not the plus) works great without the downloading feature.
A great piece of equipment.
