When deciding what type of cleaner to purchase be sure to ask your local pool builder or service company for their opinion. They will know what works best in your area.
I live in Northern California and my pool is surrounded by trees. Everyday the wind blows leaves into my pool. Not to mention my gardener who comes twice a week who uses a blower and blows debris into the pool. Thank goodness the Polaris 280 was designed for this type of environment.
The Polaris 280 is the most popular in our area because pool professionals recommend them over any other brand or model. Don’t be fooled, the Polaris 380 is a newer design, but its not as reliable as the 280.
I have had my Polaris 280 for three years now and have had only one problem with it. The float that keeps it upright failed. I went to my pool supply store and picked one up one for three dollars. You can expect to get over tens years of service from you investment.
This type of cleaner is designed for in-ground pools that have a separate pump for the pool cleaner. If you are having a pool built, be sure to insist they install a separate pump and ask for a Polaris 280. I program my cleaner to operate from 8:00am to 12:00pm every day. I empty the leave bag every 2 weeks.
If your pool is not surrounded by trees, then you most likely can get by with a different (less expensive) type of cleaner, possibly one that does not use a dedicated pump.
