| reasonfaith's Full Review: Polaroid PDM-0732 7 in. Portable DVD Player |
Polaroid's 7-inch portable DVD player is tiny, lightweight and easy to operate for movie watching, but can get complicated viewing JPEG photos. The screen is very small so make sure you include any optional adapters to connect with a larger monitor or TV if you want to share the movie being watched on a bigger screen.
This model has a Dolby Digital Decoder for high-quality audio and video. It is compatable with use of DVDs, CDs and picture CD discs. It has fast forward and backward and slow back and forth and last memory playback. This means it can stop the track and remember where you were and continue playing from that spot when the power or status come back on.
They say the 7-inch screen has high resolution "MPEG-2 for 500 lines of horizontal resolution" but let's face it, the screen is very small and clarity will not be your biggest problem here. Get out your glasses. I found the resolution a tad bit grainey and the system did not always scan and pan or advance through chapters (DVD) or tracks (CD) the way I had hoped, but that was probably due more to my lack of technology than the system itself.
The top lid lifts up to reveal the screen and two speakers on each side. On the face of the base are the Title, Menu buttons, Ent (enter to confirm selection), MODE to change the brightness plus color and contrast, PLAY/PAUSE, Stop, and Zoom in and out of current images which is fun. The battery-charge indicator light is green when operating and turns red during standby. There also are the Setup, Slow, Open and finally the plus/minus buttons which increase the levels.
On the right side of the base you find the volume control for speakers or headphones (optional) as well as the headphone jack, audio input/output jack, video input/output. There is a switch for AV IN to input any external AV source and an in jack for a 9.5 volt connection to a power supply like car adapter. On the left side is the On/Off.
The screen displays a Polaroid logo. Hit open and place your disc into the tray with the printed side up. Closing the disc cover starts play automatically. Volume control is on the right panel. When viewing photos the machine can zoom to 200 percent normal size or reduce to 50 percent. Speeds for DVD can go to 32x in sequence. You can rotate pictures and set up for viewing on a TV display.
This little machine has so many functions that it is absolutely imperative that you hang onto the owner's manual for instructions.
The rechargeable battery pack is easy to remove and install. It must be attached to the DVD player to charge it using the AC adapter. You can connect by cable to amplifiers or headphones. When using the adapter, the LCD screen will be brighter plugged into your outlet than by use of the battery pack alone. Even when you turn the DVD player off, it still consumes power off the battery in standby mode, so make sure that the power is turned off and any AC adapter disconnected before removing the battery pack.
