The Polk DS7200 Home Theater System is a Great All-In-One System!

Written: Jan 05 '03 (Updated Jan 27 '03)
Pros:Nice sound and quality!
Cons:The Price!
The Bottom Line: Polk has put together a speaker system and receiver that is great for any Home Theater System!

The Polk DS7200 Home Theater System gives you everything you need to add the movie theater sound to your TV set. You get a receiver, four surround sound speakers, a center speaker and a subwoofer. List price for the system is $2299 but can be found for under $2000. The system can be purchased with a DVD player made for the system for an additional $300, this review is without the DVD player.

Preamp/Processor
The receiver (Preamp/Processor) produces a total of 350 watts of power for the whole system. It comes with a basic remote that is easy to use. (You get a better remote if you purchase the system with the DVD player.)

The receiver has an AM/FM tuner with built-in Dolby Digital, DTS and 5-channel stereo processing. It also has 6-channel DVD-Audio and SACD inputs.

It weighs 10 pounds and in size is 4-½ inches in height by 17-¼ inches in width by 14 inches deep.

It has all kinds of inputs and outputs from digital inputs, composite video inputs, S-video inputs, stereo inputs and a 6-channel analog (RCA Jacks) inputs.

An FM loop antenna is included with this unit.

Surround Speakers
The system comes with four identical satellite speakers made for left and right front and left and right rear. The speakers are made to sit on top of something or you can mount them on the wall by the mounting slots in back of the speakers or an optional wall bracket mount.

The speakers stand at 8 inches high by 6-¾ inches wide by 4 inches deep and weigh 4.6 pounds each. Each speaker has a one-inch tweeter and a 3-¼ inch midrange speaker. They are shielded speakers made out of a polymer with rubber around it for durability.

Center Speaker
Times are changing, it use to be that all five speakers in a system were the same, today the center speaker is a little larger because of an added second midrange speaker. Since this is where the main speech comes from, the added speaker helps to produce a louder and clearer sound for the speech.

The center speaker is longer at 14 inches wide by 5 ¾ inches high by 4-11/16 inches deep weighing 7.7 pounds. It uses the same tweeter and midrange speakers as the four satellite speakers with an added second midrange speaker.

Subwoofer
The subwoofer gives you the bass sound in the system that makes it all sound like it is live!

This is the biggest and heaviest part of the system weighing in at 39 pounds. It is 16-½ inches in height by 13-½ wide by 16-¼ inches deep. It has an 8-inch polymer-composite woofer to produce a rich and powerful deep bass sound.

Setup
Setup is rather easy with the full color diagram and fully detailed manual. The thing that is the most time consuming will be running the wires for the speakers, especially for the back speakers.

The system comes in two boxes, both boxes weighing in at about 128 pounds. You get a DB-25 cable about 13 feet long for the subwoofer with 3 speaker wires 30 feet long and two speakers wires 50 feet long. The speaker wires are pre-stripped and color-coded for easy installation.

Should you use Monster cable? Well this would be your own choice and preference, many people are happy with the supplied wiring.

Overall time will be from 1 to 3 hours for setup.

Overall
The system comes with a 5-year warranty on parts and labor except the subwoofer, which carries a 3-year warranty. Everything on the system is nice looking from the receiver to all the speakers and subwoofer, they all have that nice modern look.

The power of 350 watts produces plenty of sound and power for most people. The volume can be cranked up most of the way before you hear any distortion in the clarity. At this high level the subwoofer will start to rattle things in the house.

Home Theater use with this system was on a 65-inch Hitachi Widescreen TV with a Pioneer DVD player. Watching the movies produced great Home Theater sounds through DVD movies. Movies off the cable system also produced a great sound but not as good as the DVD movies from the DVD player. Dolby verses DTS, in “The Gladiator” you can hear a slight difference in the sound with DTS coming out as the winner.

For sound and quality it sounds as good as many systems running 500 watts. The only disappointment that I really see is the cost of the system. Checkout Epinions sponsors on “Compared Prices” and you will find it for $1665.00, (Their price shows the DVD player with it.) which is a decent price for a total quality system like this.
