Pros:can be covered by insurance, fruit flavored
Cons:cannot hide in milk, powerful scent
The Bottom Line: An excellent source of nine vitamins for finicky eaters
When a child hits the toddler cycle and makes the transition from formula or breast milk to solid foods a vitamin supplement is usually introduced. This can be based on a recommendation from the Pediatrician, Dietician or other health care professional. Several years ago my children received an assessment from a feeding clinic with the final recommendation mentioning a multi vitamin for each of them.

For some this might mean stopping by the neighborhood pharmacy or checking the medicine aisle at the grocery store or even Kmart or Walmart. I tend to purchase a generic multivitamin for myself that does not cost more than a few dollars and when pregnant I received my prenatal vitamins through the insurance plan. Makes sense in my opinion to ask the Pediatrician for an individual prescription for each child to accommodate their vitamin supplement needs.
I am still receiving chewable vitamin prescriptions for my seven-year old and they are comparable to the Flintstones brand. With my younger son the majority of his nutrition comes from a soymilk. Three months ago I received a prescription for ensure plus to add to his soymilk twice a day. Before deciding on the Ensure Plus, the Pediatrician thought trying the Poly-Vi-Sol Vitamin Drops for Infants & Toddlers was worth a shot.
These are the same vitamin drops I was able to sneak inside the juice bottles when his brother was smaller and then add without incident to his morning orange juice. Without a prescription you are talking about ten dollars for this 1 2/3 fluid ounces container. The signature logo is that of the bunny rabbits that is found on Enfamil products by Mead Johnson® Nutritionals. The box I have also contained a valuable coupon inside. The bottom section of the box has the expiration date stamped as April 2003, so this does last about a year from the date of purchase.
I have always loved the smell of these vitamins, not sure what the scent is but it is unique. The container is clear so you can see the dark liquid inside and the orange dropper. When you first open the box the dropper is wrapped separately in plastic and the lid to the container gets tossed and replaced with the sanitary dropper. The dropper is clear and has close to the top the 1 ml reading. With just one squeeze you get the contents into the drink of choice, but a small amount will remain at the top and is normal.
In order to open the dropper lid you have to press down and turn since this is a child proof opening. When done depressing the dropper it can be placed back in the jar and twisted back tightly and stored at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. This is safe to mix into formula, juice, cereal and other food or for those brave enough it is even dispensed directly into the mouth. I would love to know who is able to do that with their child, plus what kid would want their vitamins that way.
My son is finicky for sure and can tell the smell of this stuff and refuses his bottle. Now that he is getting vitamins through the drink supplement this is not necessary, but I keep it just in case we have a need for it before it expires. There is no reason for refrigeration either, plus this contains no sugar.
The chart on the box has different percentage values for infants and then toddlers up to age four. All the vitamins are 100% for the infant stage with only Vitamin D being 100% for the older child. The others are between 50-89% of the daily value. Th vitamins consist of A, C, D, E, B6, B12, Thiamin, Riboflavin and Niacin.
When children are in those transition periods, having growth spurts or consuming the same food for a week straight, this would be the ideal vitamin supplement that may very well be covered by insurance as well.
