How we all love puppies. Their cute little antics, the running and tripping over their own feet, that wonderful smelling 'puppy breath', the snuggling up with something small and warm..... and how we all HATE that housebreaking stage!!

I want to share with you a discovery that I found when we brought home our 2 pound Chihuahua puppy, 'Kilo'. A discovery that made housebreaking a breeze!

We have all heard of the different pads for house breaking our new puppies... Puppy Pads, Wee Wee Pads, Piddle Pads,...and more!

The brand I chose were "PoochPads For Small Pooches".
The way I chose these pads was by smelling them! I didn't want a pad that had been treated with a chemical that would attract by puppy. These could be harmful to such a little pup! (go ahead....call me an 'over protective mother'!)

PoochPads didn't have an odor to them.... and that way I could put the puppies own piddle odor on them!

These "PoochPads for Small Pooches" are about 17 X 24 inches in size. Large enough for the puppy to do some sniffing around before she finds that perfect spot...and small enough to place almost anywhere!

PoochPads are plastic backed absorbent fiber pads.
They hold the wetness so that it doesn't run all over the floor. I love the fact that they can be used a few times before being tossed and that they contain any orders!

But alas, "PoochPads for Small Pooches" can only be as effective as the puppies new 'Alpha Pack Leader' wants them to be. So next I'll give you a few clues on how to use the "PoochPads" so that you and your puppy can both be happy with them.

Usually the first thing you want to do with a new 4-legged family member is play! So get down on that floor and enjoy the heck out of your new pet.

Puppies tire easily. They will play fast & furious for maybe 15 minutes....and then it's nap time. Before that nap... take the pup onto a hard surface and let it walk around. 10 to 1 it's going to pee also. LET THAT HAPPEN AND DO NOT TO ANY SCOLDING!!

Before cleaning up the puddle (with a water & vinegar mixture)....take a paper towel and drop a few drops of the pee onto one of the PoochPads. Then place the pad in the same spot where puppy decided to piddle after the piddle is cleaned up. Let the puppy smell the pad....(and NOT by rubbing her nose in it!) and tell her what a good girl she is!

Now you can go play some more. But only for about 20 minutes or so before it's time to piddle again.

Puppies usually piddle after eating, and always after naps. So after her nap ....place her gently on the "PoochPad" and tell her over and over and over again to 'go potty'! (Other phrases are good to use also....just be sure to keep using that same phrase until they are trained.) By doing this....you are basically training your puppy to go potty on command. This will come in very handy as the years go by... especially if you travel.

Once she has conquered using the “Pouch Pads”… start moving them closer to the door that you want her to use when she needs to tell you that she needs to do her duty! Moving them maybe 10 feet at each move. The final move should be outside the door onto the lawn or dirt. Leave the pad there for awhile... or wipe it's scent on the dirt or grass area where you prefer the puppy to go. And before you know it she will be housebroken!

Remember to put her piddle scent on each pad that you change for the first 3 or 4 times. This can be done simply by rubbing the old and the new together.
If she goofs… or misses the pad… let her know by the TONE OF YOUR VOICE that you are very unhappy with her. This is something that she will really want to avoid doing again! And think about it... would you really be able to love someone who kept beating on you?

Now, all you have to do is teach her a few other commands and love and cherish her as she will love and cherish you!
