Two years ago when birthday shopping for my nephew who was turning three, I came across the game Milton Bradley’s Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game. My nephew was a huge Pooh fan, so I thought this would be the perfect gift. My nephew loved the game but quickly grew bored with it. My sister (his mommy) did not like the game from the start. My youngest turned three recently and we have inherited the Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game. I now understand why my sister wasn’t too thrilled with this game. Let’s start with what comes with the game.
Out of the box, Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game comes with a game board, four plastic mover pieces; there is one each of Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore, nine stand up scenes with stands, sixty four cads and a Pooh hunny truffle recipe.
Before playing for the first time, some assembly is required. The nine scenes need to be punched out and placed in their stands and set up around the game board.
Let’s Play. Place the cards face down in a pile. The cards consist of picture cards, one color block and two color block cards. When a one color block card is pulled, you move your Pooh character to the color on the card. If a two color block card is pulled, you move two of the colors on the card. When a picture card is pulled, you move to the picture on the game board. This may be a forward move or a backward move.
Each player chooses a Pooh character for their mover. The first player picks a card and moves to the appropriate square. Play continues until one person reaches the last space which is the 100 Acre Wood picnic.
There are two shortcut spaces on the game board. There is a Balloon Ride and the Bridge to 100 Acre Wood. If you land on either of these spaces you can walk over the shortcut to the other side. There are also spots to watch out for. There is the Beehive, the rainstorm and the heffalumps. These are penalty spots that you are stuck on until you pull the card that the square requires.
The game also comes with a recipe card for Pooh Hunny Truffles. You and your child can enjoy this treat once you reach the 100 Acre Picnic. We have never tried this recipe.
OK you are thinking, sounds just like Candy Land, what is the problem? The game is like Candy Land with a Pooh touch. But there are a few flaws with this game. For one, the color block cards. Most three year olds can recognize red, blue, green, yellow and the like. Well in Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game they use colors like mauve, turquoise, gold and the like. Actually this wouldn’t be so bad if the colors on the cards match the colors on the game board. Unfortunately the shades are off and they do not match. When my son pulled a card, we would discuss the color, and then I would ask him to show me where the color was on the game board. He would tell me that the color wasn’t on the board. I would show him the color block on the board and he would say that no, it did not look like the same color on the card (which he was very right because the shades were different). This makes the game very long, boring and frustrating for my three year old.
I also think the nine stand up scenes are a waste. They are solely there for decoration. We don’t even put them up anymore when playing because they serve no purpose and just take up time when setting up.
Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game is recommended for children three to six and requires 2 to 4 players. There is no reading required but can enhance your child’s color recognition and symbol matching. We also practice counting when playing. I ask my son to count between the squares when we are moving from color to color.
If you ask this mommy, stick with the original Candy Land. Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game is a cute concept but it falls short of the mark.
If you have a Pooh fan in your home, I’m sure they would enjoy the game. But I would recommend purchasing this for an older child, like around kindergarten age.
All in all, Pooh Candy Land Edition 100 Acre Wood Picnic Game isn’t a bad game but I would recommend original Candy Land over this version any day.
