Cons: Reciprocating Saw
Well, this is the second tool set of this sort that I have reviewed. I have also written a review on the nearly equivalent Bosch version of this set. This Porter Cable set, however, is a 19.2 Volt set, and does not include a Jigsaw. There are some very good features in this 9987QP Porter Cable Cordless Tool Set. Also, there are some features that are not so good. This review will outline the set tool by tool. If you read on, this review will help you compare and contrast different companys cordless tool sets.
This is Porter Cables Model 987 Two-Speed Cordless Drill/Driver. This drill will function as a Hammer Drill, Screw Gun, and a regular drill. This drill weighs the same as the Bosch set. Which is a good weight for a cordless drill. This drill seems to be durable. It continues working correctly even after being dropped. This drill has an auto locking chuck that comes in very handy. The two speeds of the drill do not seem to have a large difference. This does not cause much of a problem for me though, since I use the high speed almost all of the time. The auxiliary handle on this drill is of the screw in type. This is a very nice feature, because it does not slip off like some other slide on versions do. Also this feature is easy to put on and remove. Also with this drill they provide three different hand grip sizes (S,M,L). This helps to make the grip more of a custom fit, and it does a very good job. This drill will also last for good days worth of work with the 19.2 V battery provided. As with any cordless, heavy work will wear on the battery. Overall: A-
The flashlight that is provided with this set is a standard flashlight. This light does a good job of projecting light. This flashlight does have a moveable head, which is nice. However, there are still some situations in where this flashlight cannot shine where you want it to. Overall, this flashlight has a better design than some sets I have seen. Overall: B
This case is nice, but it has some flaws. It is nice when it comes to cleaning. It is very easy to clean up since it is made out of hard plastic. It is also nice when it comes to keeping the tools organized. There are a few problems with this case though. There is very little, if any, space to put extra items that you may need, such as other tools etc. Also, it is difficult to shut this case if you do not have the battery in the reciprocating saw or the circular saw put away just right. Overall: B-
This Porter Cable Tiger Saw is oddly shaped. It has a short stubby shape as compared to a normal reciprocating saw shape. This shape seems to make it more difficult to use. Sometimes you cannot get the angle that you want. The quick change on this tool is not very handy. It is a twist that you must do. In order to twist it, you must be careful to get the chuck out where you can work on it. Then twist, hold, and insert blade. The head is not adjustable for when you have longer or shorter blades. This makes it much easier to break off blades or ruin blades. It does have a lock on it that works well, as all saws should have. Overall: C
This Porter Cable Saw Boss Circular Saw is a pretty good saw. There are some good advantages with this tool and some disadvantages. One good feature of this tool is that the blade cover is metal. This makes it much more durable than the plastic of other sets. This saw seems to be smaller than other sets. However, it seems to be heavier. This seems to be because of the design of the tool. I must mention that this saw does an excellent job of cutting. It quite powerful. As with all saws, it will wear on the battery if used too much. The blade is a quick change, and it works well. The easy adjust angles use an arm to be adjusted. This works well, however, I prefer the twist knobs featured in other sets. Also, the dust bagger option seems to be less effective than other sets. Overall: B
This battery charger is very nice. It is a 1 hour charger. This charger will work on the Porter Cable 9.6, 14.4, 12, and 19.2 volt charger. This charger seems to be pretty smart. If you put a battery in that is too hot or cold, it will wait to charge the battery. This is nice because hot or cold batteries can sustain damage by charging. This charger will also tell you if you have a defective battery. It charges the batteries in an hour as it says, which may cause you to get a few extra batteries. This charger is pretty big, but that is no big deal. It seems to be fairly durable and easy to clean. Overall: A- (only because it takes an hour to charge)
Porter Cable provides 2 batteries with this set. The batteries in this set are of the slide in type. They do not push up like many other sets. To me this seems to make the batteries a little more durable. However, it does seem to make them a little harder to put in and take out. The batteries are 19.2 volt and 2.4 amp hours. Like other sets, the saws seem to wear out the batteries quickly. The 19.2 volt batteries seem to perform equally to the 18 volt sets I have seen/used. Overall: B+
This tool set has a 1 year Warranty.
Overall, I would have to say that this tool set is handy. As with all Cordless combo kits, it is a bit pricey, but price is no object if the tool can help cut time and energy. This set can definitely do that for you. As for whether you should buy this set or an equivalent set by another company, that is for you to decide. I am simply trying to provide you with information, so you can make an informed decision.
Thank you for reading my review. I hope you find the information helpful.
