I've been on a nailer purchasing binge in the past year and picked up three air nailers. Not quite sure how I ever survived without them ... my thumbs sure appriciate these purchases I know that. Porter Cable has always made a nice product, and this air nailer is holding up to that name so far.
I actually bought a refurbished unit, the price was right in Home Depot on the day that I realized a 3" framing nail was just tooooo big and a 1" 18 gauge nail was just toooo small. Thus, I now have the one in the middle that fits just right. Being a guy, it doesn't take much to convince me to buy another tool.
I highly recommend, if you're not worried about the expense, that you purchase three nailers. A framing nailer, a mid finish nailer, and a small finish nailer. (A roofer would be cool too.) This unit shoots from 1" to 2 1/2" nails, which is perfect for securing most moldings. The smaller nailers shoot only 18 gauge nails up to 1 1/4", that doesn't leave much when you push one through 3/4" of molding into sheetrock. They don't hit the studs and nothing stays in place.
If you're limited on budget, buy one about this size and you'll cover most of your tasks. It will drive 1" nails for more detailed moldings and trim, but be aware that it may split something as small as doorstop molding if you're not carefull. Obviously you won't be doing any framing with it, but it's easier to drive a large framing nail than it is to hold a hammer, nail, and piece of molding over your head.
I've been putting up a ton of moldings and trim as part of my home renovations. My porch has 1/2" ship lapped oak on the walls and the 2 1/2" 16 gauge nails are working great. In the past few months I have had this unit I shot several thousand nails, only one or two jams and that seemed to be due to bent nails or hitting something metal in the wall.
