Porter Cable-Cable NS150B… My Keeper Of The Crown!
Written: May 29, 2010 (Updated May 29, 2010)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Durable, Serviceable, Light, Maintenance Free, Versatile
Cons:Flimsy Belt Clip
The Bottom Line: Porter Cable delivers a dependable, versatile Crown Stapler.
Staplers are a great tool to have in your arsenal whether a hobbyist or a professional. Often nails are overkill or inappropriate for a given project when staples offer a better alternative, as is the case with furniture, crafts, flooring and some molding projects. Having a good pneumatic stapler is an obvious advantage in that you now have the ability to both drive the faster with one blow saving any marring on your project, making quick work of it as well. Today the cost of admission for a good crown staple is under one hundred dollars as it is with the Porter Cable NS 150B 18 Gauge Pneumatic Stapler.
Porter Cable has long been a leader in the manufacture of pneumatic nailers, for a very sound reason, they are good. Constructed from die cast aluminum with rubber comfort grips, the NS150 is capable of firing ½" to 1 ½" 18 gauge crown staples, with a ¼" crown in either a bump or sequential firing sequence with selectable triggers. Bump firing is helpful on projects like floor underlayment where you simply strike the surface to fire a fastener. Sequential firing is more deliberate and better suited for piecework where care is required as in furniture work or molding.
Staple magazines are loaded easily into the bottom mounted magazine tray, which is easily loaded with the aid of a slide open/close mechanism. Jams are virtually eliminated by the use of a split nosed contact tip, which also aids in the event you may get an eventual jam. The rear mounted air inlet gets the hose away from your field of vision and helps stabilize the NS150B especially as you maneuver into tight spaces though it may get in the way while holstered. The rear exhaust port also keep your work free from exhaust contaminates saving oil from marring your work. Versatility is a strong suit with the capability to use ½" to 1 ½" staples selected with a depth control, located near the trigger for proper tip deployment. An integrated belt hook, which is a bit cheesy, may leave you looking for alternative belt hooks. The NS150B operates at a 70-120 PSI.
Weighing 2.6 lbs., the Porter Cable NS150B is light and user friendly. The unit requires no maintenance or oil to operate making it both time cost efficient. Porter Cable offers replacement parts and rebuild kits making it easy to repair. An internal piston catch keeps pressure constant pressure on every fastener shot.
Among the projects I have used the NS 150B on include fastening a back on some custom made cabinets, a neighbors daughters playhouse flooring, a custom made CD tower and a number of kitchen floor underlayment projects. I really can’t say we use it commercially as much as other nailers but it does come in handy from time to time and makes it to the job box for those times when it can save the day.
I own a number of Porter Cable pneumatic nailers and really appreciate their effectiveness on any project I have used them on. The NS150B is yet another example of why they continue to be a favorite in my shop.
