I’ve been drinking a lot of pumpkin beers lately and most have been good, but none have been outstanding until now. Post Road Pumpkin Ale has everything I like in a pumpkin beer – delicious, well-balanced taste; smooth finish and a perfect body (not to mention the fact it’s probably the prettiest and best-smelling beer of this sort).
POUR, COLOR AND AROMA
I had a hunch I was in for a good beer just from the way Post Road Pumpkin Ale poured to a perfect layer of off-white, foamy head which never dissipated and left a lot of lacing on the glass.
The beer has a beautiful color of copper with an orange hue and is crystal clear. The aroma itself is an intoxicating scent of clove, cinnamon and pumpkin. It was sweet, but not overwhelming nor gimmicky.
TASTE
I don’t think most people realize how many different ingredients go into a typical pumpkin ale. Beers of this type are loaded with spices, so it’s difficult to make a truly tasty beer that is able to balance out the flavor combination.
Post Road Pumpkin Ale initially tastes like a standard dark ale with some intense flavoring. However, drinking it a little too cold actually hinders the taste. Waiting for it to warm just a little really unlocks the flavor. This is a fantastic blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and real pumpkin.
This beer has a very authentic taste to it, and it certainly should since it’s made with real pumpkin and not artificial flavoring. Beers with synthetic ingredients tend to taste gimmicky, but this one is wholly authentic.
FINISH
Upon my first swig of Post Road I knew I liked the taste, but because it was so strong I was expecting a harsh finish. While it’s true this beer does tingle a bit during the first few swigs, it finishes very smoothly overall. I think just a few tastes is all it takes to prepare your palate for the delicious flavor. How can a beer have so many spices and still finish so clean? It’s impressive to say the least.
BODY
It’s easy to tell just from looking at Post Road that it’s not going to be a heavyweight beer. It has a fairly lean complexion and although it packs a punch in the flavor department, its smooth side really compliments its body – which is perfectly medium. At only 5% ABV and a calorie content of most likely less than 150 (information not available on the brewer’s website), Post Road can be drunk quickly, easily and in large quantities without filling you up.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I’m so happy to have finally found a five-star pumpkin beer. Others have come close, but Post Road Pumpkin Ale is definitely the best. It’s no wonder; it’s a product of Brooklyn Brewery – a name you can trust for high quality beer.
