There are three Potbelly's that I know of. One on Lincoln Ave, one at Madison and Franklin and another at State and Lake. I have been to all three and I can tell you that every time, it is excellent.
The crowd (and there is always a crowd) is very young, in their 20s. Follow their lead in the ordering process. At the very far end of the counter you order your sub. Be sure to tell them what kind you want and if you want it hot or cold. Also, this is when you chime in if you want w/ or w/o cheese.
Follow the line down the counter. You can watch as you sub comes out of the oven. Don't be too spacy, because they will yell out your sub (like "hot turkey"), that is when you step up and let them know what you want on it. The toppings are your typical lettuce, tomato, pickle, peppers, mayo, mustard etc.
They also have soup (never tried it) and chips and drinks (get your drink at the beginning of the line). One of their specialties is shakes. And they are very good. They are almost as expensive as the subs, so I usually get one or the other. But they come with a very cute little cookie, that makes you feel like a kid again.
After you get your sub, squeeze into a check-out line and pay. This is where there is the most confussion, because the line to get in is often blocking the cashiers.
I never go to Potbelly's when I am in a rush, or with a huge group of people. There can sometimes be a long wait and it is often hard to find seating at the lunch time rush.
However, I love to introduce people to their amazing sandwiches, and create new loyal customers.
