| JDinPA's Full Review: Pounce Hairball Treat Ment |
If you have read my other pet reviews you will know that we recently added a third cat to our furrball home. This cat, ChaCha, has the loveliest golden tresses that unfortunately have caused some hairball stomach upsets since his arrival. Grooming your cat is always a nice thing to do for their health and coat/skin condition and deserves some big purr ratings, but sometimes that is not enough.
Pounce Hairball Treatment comes in a 1.7 oz cardboard "can" that will run you about $2.99. In the regular world of treats and even cat food, that is quite a bit when you consider the amount you actually get. Well at about 65 pieces of this "treat" (yes, I did count them, but had to give my purry buddies some and kind of lost count of the exact number I gave!!!!!) lets look at the mathematics of it all ^..^ ^..^ ^..^ . . . . .
If you are giving your cat the amount needed to eliminate the hairballs they have, you will be feeding them 3-5 pieces once a day until the hairball is gone (not really sure how you'd know that, but I guess if they have quit hacking them up, that'd be a good sign! lol). Ok, now lets just say you give them 5 a day - that $2.99 can will last you 13 days or almost 2-weeks. Only give them 3 a day and now the can will go 3 weeks for you. I would think 2 to 3 weeks is sufficient time to get rid of a hairball ~ I sure wouldn't want to have one that long!!!!
Ok, now you have rid your cat of it's hairball and you want to use this product to prevent future hairball formation. In this case you will need to feed your cat 3-5 pieces once or twice a week. At 10-pieces a week this $2.99 can go just over 6-weeks, limit them to one time a week use of this product and now you are talking over 3-months. $2.99 does not seem so bad looking at those kind of numbers.
These figures are of course based on ONE cat. I have THREE. This can run into some money for me, but not hearing that gaggy hacky yuck sound and then having to clean it up is worth it to me to become proactive and do something about preventing hairballs. Such a lovely subject, but cat lovers everywhere do not mind talking front end, back end or internal workings to have a healthy happy purring friend.
I do want to stress that this should not be looked on as a treat, but as a medication. Over feeding or improper use could cause intestinal or stomach upset, loose runny stools, or loss of appetite for their regular diet. This product contains mineral oil and glycerine which could over-lubricate your cat's insides if you know what I mean!
There is a warning on the can that this product is not to be given to kittens less than 8-weeks old, and to keep this and all medication out of the reach of children and other pets. So please do take use of this "treat" seriously and follow the recommended "dosages."
The ingredients in Pounce Hairball Treatment are: Malt Syrup, Mineral Oil, Pregelatinized Wheat Flour, Wheat Flour, Water, Soy Flour, Beef, Fructose, Glycerine, Animal Digest, Dried Egg Product, Chicken Meal, Dried Torula Yeast, Sugar, Dried Chedder Cheese, followed by a listing of preservatives and food dyes. These "treats" must be heavily flavored and highly sweetened to help hide the taste of the mineral oil. If your cat has diabetes talk with your vet as this does contain several kinds of sugar.
The Pounce pieces are small. They kind of look like an itty bitty "pizza roll." They are barely 1/2" long and about a 1/4" wide. They are soft but not smushy to the touch. They smell just like any ole regular cat food or treat. But I guess the individual cat will make the final decision as to whether it is worthy enough to go in their mouth!
Now ChaCha, the one with all the lusterous hair, absolutely loves this. Molly ate hers so fast I really did not even see her chew them up - they just vaporized in her mouth, and I thought she was going to grab my finger with the treat when I was giving her one!!! Whitey, on the other hand, sniffed it a few times then moved to the other side of the room. She had no interest in trying this at all. Go figure! Your cat may or may not like Pounce Hairball Treatment - the only way to know is to buy a can and give it a try - save your receipt so that you can hopefully return it to the store you bought it at. We have not used this long enough for me to know just how effective it is - but I'm keeping my eye on ChaCha and the calendar!!
