clooneyfan's Full Review: Pounce Hairball Treat Ment
I recently adopted 2 long haired male kittens.
While in the grocery store, I came across Pounce Hairball Treatment. It comes in a convenient little purple can, similar to other kitty treats. Recommended dose is 3 -5 pieces once or twice a week in between meals and without food. I highlight this because I initially did not read the directions well and was putting these in with their dry food. The main ingredients are malt syrup and mineral oil, which forms the "gel" in the middle that acts as a laxative. The gel is surrounded by a kitty treat.
A hairball treatment disguised as a treat! This sounded like a great idea so I bought a container. My last cat suffered horribly from hairballs and was constantly yacking on my bed and carpet. Yeech. My throat tightens up just thinking about it.
I came home and shook the can. My 2 boys rushed over and fought over who was going to get the first one. I gave each of them two and they gobbled them down greedily. I smiled. This was going to be easy.
The next week
I put down a hairball treatment for each of them. Ash, the youngest at 6 months, eagerly ate his. Of course, Ash is not particularly discriminating and will eat just about anything. Columbus, the 9 month old part Maine Coon, sniffed his suspiciously. Then he shook his paw disdainfully and walked away from it. I picked it up and held it out for him, reminding him "But you liked it last week!" It was to no avail. He would have nothing to do with it. Ash ran over and greedily devoured it.
Since each cat has their own bowl, I put these treats in with their dry food (a no-no but I didn't read the directions well those first few weeks). Most of the time Columbus would eat around it, leaving it at the bottom. Occasionally, it would be gone. Did he accidently eat it? Perhaps, although I suspect Ash the hog came over to eat it for him.
It's been 3 weeks now. Today, I tried hand feeding them a piece. Ash ate his with gusto but Columbus once again turned his nose up at it. Ash ran over to eat it.
My recommendation: They're a little pricey, but if you've got the $$ or a coupon, it never hurts to try. It's an easy way to effectively reduce the hairball problem if your cat will eat them. If you've got a picky eater like I do, you're back to square one.
While some cats don't mind taking a hairball treatment, others will do anything not to! These are the cats Pounce Hairball Treat-Ments were made for. ...More at PetSmart
