The Bottom Line: A treat my cats love at a reasonable cost. Tartar Control is a plus.

Tooth care is so essential to the well being of your cat. Purina did a study which they have reported on their website www.catchow.com: A one-year study of 30 shorthaired cats at the Purina Pet Care Center showed that dry food helps to reduce plaque and tartar. One group of cats was fed a commercial dry diet, and another was fed a commercial canned food. Both diets were complete and balanced for growth and maintenance. Cats fed the dry food had lower plaque and calculus scores, resulting in improved dental health. As people who share our lives with cats, we often neglect their mouth care. Of course, cats should be seeing the Veterinarian once a year anyway, and have their teeth and gums checked at that time. Occasionally, a good cleaning is required which your Vet can do while your pet takes a little "nap" (drug induced). It does not take long; hence the sedative or anesthesia will be light.
Did you know that your cat has two sets of teeth much like we do? They have 26 deciduous or "milk teeth" beginning about six weeks of age. Generally, their 30 permanent teeth are in place by the time they are about six months old. Keeping those teeth in good condition is necessary for a couple of reasons. To begin, if their teeth are not healthy, eating becomes a problem and they can become nutritionally stressed. Also, if they have bad teeth, as in people, they can get infections in their teeth or gums, but those infections can also be transferred to the heart (causing valve problems) or the kidneys. So, it's not just a vanity problem, it's a general health issue.
My cats have eaten dry food since I've had them and in their 9 years, they have only had to have their teeth cleaned once. I generally lean toward the crunchy or "Tartar Control" treats. But, I digress.
The Package
One of my latest treat choices was Pounce Ocean Whitefish & Crab Flavor Tartar Control Crunchy Cat Treats. These come in a foil 2.1 ounce that is designed with green and purple graphics. It also states on the front of the pouch also states "Calcium Enriched for Strong Teeth & Bones. The treats themselves do smell "fishy" and are shaped in sort of numchuck or gear shape, half in yellow and the others in red. I found these at my local Walmart for $.88 for a bag.

My Experience
I still follow Dr. Jennifer's recommendations and treat the treats like something special. They don't get them every day, but may get them up to 4 days a week. When they have had treats, I take that into consideration and make adjustments in their regular food if necessary to keep them within their proper number of calories. That seldom is really a problem, because I usually only give them each 3-4 treats. I seriously doubt that those few treats are making a significant difference in their mouth care. So long as they continue to eat dry food, I believe that will remain under control. This is one of the treats that got a clear 8 paws up as they both eagerly get in line for Pounce Ocean Whitefish & Crab Flavor Tartar Control Crunchy Cat Treats. Of course, my little "porker", Nermal will eat almost anything and Phoebe is more particular... she is also quite svelte. But, Phoebe loves these also. So, they are a winner in this house.
