It’s rare that you will hear me bash a PowerBar product but there are times that I wish that they would make things a little more clear for people who aren’t up on their sports nutrition definitions. This product is classified as an “energy” snack; while it is true that it will give you a small burst of energy, you are getting most of that from sugar which means that in a short while you will crash from it. This could lead to you wanting something else to eat or feeling a little drained. You aren’t going to get a huge boost of energy or feel like you are going to be able to clean the house from top to bottom, that’s something that I feel is very misleading about products like this. They aren’t telling a bold face lie about their product or what it could do for you but they sure are stretching things. Each bag has 1.76 ounces of energy bites to them so you are getting something that is going to hold you over until a meal but it should never be used as a meal replacement.

One of the constants of the Energy Bite line is the shape of the ‘nuggets’ most of them are a uniformed octagonal shape but you will get some that are broken up. To us this doesn’t really make a whole lot of difference since most of the time they are smashed up before the bags are even opened so we can sprinkle them over ice cream, add to yogurt or toss in with granola type cereals for a little extra crunch or flavor. One of my biggest concerns about products like this, outside of the carbohydrates, is the after taste and if I am going to get heartburn from it. If something has straight sugar in it, chances are I am going to get heartburn from it but so far I’ve never had this happen with this flavor. To me it has a little more of an apple taste to it than a cinnamon taste but it’s something that pleases your palette and satisfies your urge to have something sweet. This isn’t something that I can eat all the time since I try to stick to a low carbohydrate diet but when I am off of it or having a cheat day, I’ll grab a couple of these if there is a bag open. I don’t have an overwhelming urge to sit there and eat the whole bag but I can see how someone easily could because they have a great taste.
These don’t have a real strong crunch to them but there are some soy crisps in them; for those who have any type of food allergies, please real the ingredient panel closely as this contains items that are processed on machinery that comes in contact with peanut flour, eggs, milk and tree nuts. If you’re someone that hasn’t had soy protein in the past, you may want to take it easy on these at first. Some people have, well, gassy reactions to soy protein and if you have more than one bag of these you might have some negative effects from them. For vegans, this contains honey so if you are a strict vegan, you will want to skip this not just because of the honey but the possibility that it contains eggs and milk. I am hoping that PowerBar will redesign the bags that these come in; they can’t be resealed so you sort of feel pressured into eating the whole thing so they don’t go stale or get that ‘soggy’ taste to them. If you try this flavor and like it, there are some others that you might want to check out including Banana, Vanilla, Malt Nut, Peanut Butter, Chocolate, Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Butter Crisp and Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Most places will sell these for about $1.25 to $1.50 but if you shop around you may be able to find them for less than that. Super Wal-Mart locations carry a lot of PowerBar products in their diet and sport supplement areas so you never know when these are going to show up there. When we lived in San Diego I was able to get them for .99 cents a bag which was a great price for them but now that we are on the east coast, they cost a little more. This is one of the flavors that you may have trouble finding; the last time I got them was before Christmas so I have no idea if they killed off the flavor or are reworking the entire Energy Bite line. For the price this is something that is going to hold you over until you can have a well balanced meal and a great thing for kids to have after school if they do any type of sport practice or ‘need’ to have some kind of snack before dinner.
The Bottom Line
I really like the taste of these bites and really hope that they haven’t discontinued them. When I started looking online for them there were only a few stores that were carrying this flavor and when I emailed them to ask them about the expiration date, I received no reply from them. For a while there I had a rather unhealthy addiction to Yoplait Apple Turnover Yogurt and these bites were the perfect thing to smash up and mix in with it; I got that little tip from the brood who love adding the other flavors of these energy bites to cereal, ice cream, yogurt and [yuck] pudding. This might not be the best thing to grab when you are having a craving for something sweet but it’s a hell of a lot better than a candy bar or bag of potato chips.
