When it comes to picking out a sport supplement bar you have a lot of choices to make; low carb, high protein, sodium content, energy, vitamins and minerals. When you go outside that spectrum and look at all types of sport related snacks, drinks and powders, it is pretty easy to get overwhelmed. I usually stick to low or no carb bars but I am always on the look out for products that the brood might like. They will eat candy if it is around but they arent hounds about it; theyd rather grab some type of bar and toss it in their backpack although if there is any amount of pink or purple on the wrapped, they wont dare step a foot out the door with it [they think its a girlie bar]. When they started snacking on the other flavors of Energy Bites I picked up they seemed to like them - and for more than the usual snack appeal. They would toss them on ice cream, break them up and mix them in with yogurt and even add them to cereal. When I got the Peanut Butter flavor I tried a bag and they were good but not something that Id devour or risk slipping out of ketosis for. They are tasty but way too high in carbs for me to go bonkers over while I am dieting ... now, when the diet is over or I am on a break, its a completely different story.
PowerBar Energy Bites Peanut Butter Flavor
[soy protein, glucose syrup, soy crisps, rolled oats, peanuts, fructose, honey, sugar, whey powder, salt, pectin and peanut flour]
In a lot of ways these taste like the Peanut Butter Crisp version of the Energy Bites but without the soy nuggets or that really chewy taste to them. To me these are a lot better than the Peanut Butter Crisp ones but the brood didnt really seem to care whether or not they had a lot of crunch to them. Each bag has 1.76 ounces of product in it and to get the best taste, make sure you purchase them before the expiration date. If you dare consume them after that date, you will not get the same taste from them. The date should be printed on the back side of the package near the UPC code, if you are ordering them online, make sure you are dealing with a vendor that sells fresh product or will replace them if they are outdated. Trust me, shipping older products happens more often than you think. There are a lot of flavors in the series so if this one doesnt please you, consider trying some of the others [Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana, Apple Cinnamon, Chocolate Peanut, Oatmeal Raisin] before you completely give up on the Energy Bite line.
One of the biggest things for me is the after taste; some products that contain soy can leave you with some nasty reflux or a taste that you simply cant get rid of. This one has less of a soy content to it and I had no nasty after taste from it. It is chewier than the Crisp version so it is smoother and lacks a true crunch to it but it is still a good snack if you are craving peanut butter. Needless to say, if you have any type of allergy to peanuts or nuts in general, you will want to avoid this. Likewise, it is not a vegan friendly product since it contains honey as well as traces of milk. Like most of the other products in the Energy Bite line, this provides you a good percentage of the RDA [recommended daily allowance] of vitamins and minerals like calcium, Vitamin B12, niacin, thiamin, iron and zinc. Even though a good bit of the energy you receive from it comes from sugar, fructose and honey, it is something that you can pack up with the kids lunches or give then after school without having them experience a huge crash from it a few hours later.

Price
You should be able to find these for under $1.50 no matter where you shop. Gyms that were selling these did jack up the price to try and make a little extra money from customers but places like Super Wal-Mart and Target had them for as low as $1.29 per bag. The cheapest I ever saw them was .99 cents a bag at the local sport supply stores in San Diego but on the east coast, but for what ever reason, they are roughly thirty to forty cents more a bag. They are a good snack for kids but I wish that the bags were resealable. They like to toss these on top of ice cream of grab a handful here and there and if you dont seal the bag back up some how, they tend to get stale fast.
The Bottom Line
I am going to be really ticked if I find out that PowerBar did decide to cut out the Energy Bite line. While I didnt eat them all that often, they were something that the brood really enjoyed. About the only downside to this product is that the bags arent resealable, I am sure that if they had some type of zipper pouch or even a fold over flap with a piece of sticky tape, more people would buy it. I havent been disappointed with the PowerBar products that I have tried but I know that if I am every unsatisfied, I can contact them about it and receive a refund or replacement. If you are having trouble finding PowerBar products in your area you can call them at [800] 58-POWER or visit their website at www.powerbar.com.
As always, thanks for the read!
