Pros:winch is powerful enough to handle my 5,000# boat
Cons:the cable does not level wind you guide it. strap won't handle 5,000#
The Bottom Line: I had to modify the mounting, I expected the cable to level wind in changing to a strap it would handle the rating of the winch. don't buy a Power-Winch
I ordered the winch in anticipation it would handle my 18' Lund about 5,000# with the outboard motors and equipment. The winch does pull my boat on the trailer, but instead of being able to guide the back of the boat you have to watch the cable very carefully to make sure it level winds or the cable becomes wrapped over top of each other making it impossible to pull back out. I ordered the 20' strap figuring it would wind back on properly, only to find out the 1/4" bolts that clamp the strap onto the spool break they will not handle 5,000# and the strap which is rated for 5,000# will not handle the load. So now I have a winch with a broken cable, and broken clamp bolts, and a strap that is coming apart. All on a winch that is supposed to handle over 10,000#. The cable you have to hold it to get a level wind try that without gloves, the strap they have for an alternative will not handle 5,000# or even come close to the rating of the winch over 10,000#. I ordered a 25' strap so 5' is still wrapped around the strap clamp so far it is working, I changed the strap clamp bolts to a grade 5 for a little more strength. I really like the idea of a remote power winch, but I would never buy another from Power-Winch!!!
