| madarnell's Full Review: Bruce Bartlett and Jenny Bartlett - Practical Reco... |
When I heard that Bruce and Jenny Bartlett were to make an updated version of their already successful Practical Recording Techniques I was excited. Why? You may ask
it was Bruces earlier books and articles that helped change my life
well, recording and producing in my own studio that is.
I started recording my own demos at age 13 (Im 40 now) with a small Sony Walkman that had a mini plug stereo microphone and a second Akai tape cassette deck. I had no clue in the world what I was doing but just learned from trial and error.
Later, around 16,17,18 years and 2 band projects later I knew recording and producing was the mission
my quest in life. I still really had no clue how to get clean, professional sounding recordings
until I received the book Microphone Manual design and Application by David Miles Huber. This book was the start of much of my enlightenment into the world of microphones, recording and producing. This is where I started discovering this interesting author Bruce Bartlett.
But first let me give you a brief background on him based on the blurb on the back of his book, and based on my web research. Bruce is a musician. Bruce has for many years been employed by Crown International as the senior Microphone Engineer and technical writer. He has also written and published more than 800 articles on audio topics for such magazines as Modern Recording, db, Recording, EQ, Mix, Recording Engineer/Producer, Radio World, Pro Audio Review, Audio, Singer and Musician, Gig and the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society. He has also written and contributed to many books including Stereo Recording Techniques, On-location Recording Techniques, the Practical Recording Techniques series (Focal Press), Recording Demo Tapes at Home and Microphone Manual and Design Application (Howard W, Sams & Company). Bruce runs his own recording studio. He is also a member of the Audio Engineering Society and Syn-Aud-Con, and holds a degree in physics and several patents on microphone design! Whew! This guy has been busy!
Continuing
where was I?
After reading that book (Microphone Manual design and Application) many times, and realizing that many of my favorite chapters where written and contributed by Bruce Bartlett. I continued my quest for more. More, more, more
I must know more about microphones and this author! Enter Recording Demo Tapes at Home by Bruce Bartlett & John Woram, and Practical Recording Techniques 1, 2 & edition 3 by Bruce and Jenny Bartlett. And not forgetting to mention hundreds of articles and documents Bruce has written for Crown Audios Mic Memo and trade magazines like EQ, Mix, Gig and scores of others just to name a few.
This brings me to Practical Recording Techniques Fourth Edition: a step by step approach to professional audio recording. This book is jammed packed full of many of Bruces other offerings but revised and updated for recording in this modern digital age. In fact there are 20 chapters of important, practical, easy to read info that every person who wants to understand more about how to record and produce the right way should have.
Thats not all folks, there is an audio demonstration CD provided by Bruce that follows along chapter by chapter, providing aural understanding to points of interest and topics throughout the book.
I cant say enough about this latest offering from Bruce and Jenny. This book is must have for every beginner and the professional. As I read through Practical Recording Techniques Fourth Edition I kept finding myself saying oh yeah
I forgot about that or cool, I didnt think of that and even man I didnt know that!
So in closing,
What am I really trying to say here? Go buy this book! Read it! Do it! And master it! Then Rewind & Repeat often.
