pkmom's Full Review: Premier Pet Products Premier; Easy Walk? Dog Harne...
Wow! Are we ever glad for this piece of equipment!
We are the happy parents of an Elkhound/German Shepherd Mix puppy named Tomlin. At 18 months he's everything you want in a dog. He is always happy, loves to be with you, is fun and outgoing. The problem is that he pulls like crazy on a leash.
My husband and I tried the standard leash and collar routine. It didn't work. Tomlin would see something, take off, and choke himself in the process. We were afraid he would hurt himself if we didn't try something.
At PetSmart the trainer listened to our problem. We were VERY fortunate in that we did talk with a dog trainer and not your average employee. She was extremely knowledgeable. I appreciated that she took the time to listen and spent a minute with Tomlin before making the suggestion.
The product she recommended is the Premier Pet Products Easy Walk Dog Harness. There was a chart on the back of the package which helped us determine which harness to get.
Choose from:
Size Girth Breed
Petite 12"-16" Chihuahuas, Teacup Poodles, etc.
Small 15"-20" Boston Terriers, Dachshunds,Pugs
Medium 20"-28" Beagles, Border Collies,
Cocker Spaniels, Standard Schnauzers
Large 26"-36" Golden Retrievers, Malamutes
X-Large 34"-46" Mastiffs, Saint Bernards,etc.
For Tomlin, we chose the large girth. It fits well without hugging or slipping.
It's made from heavy gauge nylon and is very well put together. At a width of about 1 1/2 inches wide the harness can take anything Tomlin can dish out. We've now used it for two months. He's not stopped pulling completely but the harness did help.
Putting it on is easy. The harness slides over his head and a strap goes between his front legs. A loop in this strap allows another strap to wraps around his stomach and clasp on the side. A sturdy D shaped ring allows the leash to fasten in the middle of Tomlin's back.
Because the whole thing is so secure, the harness makes it easier to grab Tomlin if he starts to get into trouble. You don't worry about hurting him. The straps are easy to grab and the nylon weave tends to not pull out of your hands.
So far, although he's given it a run for our money, the harness has always held and he's never come out of it. Plus, since nothing is around his neck he doesn't choke if he does pull. No more coughing on the side of the road or waiting for him to catch his breath and recover!
The bright fluorescent orange color makes us easier to spot as a team. The high visibility makes me feel more secure in regards to motorists when walking in twilight or early morning.
Be prepared to pay more for it than you would for an average leash and collar. We paid about $25.00. The matching leash was another $15.00. But for the security and control it brings the harness is well worth it.
