PMS = Proof Mom Sucks! Not really! But if you ask my family that's what they're liable to say. Like most women I suffer PMS. Unlike most women I suffer terribly. In fact any living thing within 100 ft. of me suffers! Sometimes it's so bad, I don't even like myself. The physical discomforts I can almost handle, it's those darn mood swings that are torture. During those times, all it takes is for someone to look at me and say " grilled-cheese sandwich " and I morph into this horrible monster. Worse is the crying for NO apparent reason at all.
PMS is a disorder that effects millions of women. There are over 150 symptoms including irritability, bloating, backaches, headaches, and fatigue. Some women even have suicidal thoughts! These symptoms manifest during the period right before menstruation, and are absent during the rest of the cycle. Hormone levels are at their peek during this time and the choas they cause can be quite debilitating. Until recently, PMS was not a recognized disorder at all. Many thought women were just plain crazy and the symptoms were in their heads. Not any more! Medical research has proven the existance of PMS and accordingly developed medication to help women cope with the myriad of symptoms. PMS is used to describe the lessor symptoms and over the counter medication is available. The more debilitating symptoms need to been taken to a medical doctor and dealt with there. Prescription drugs are available for these symptoms too.
One of the over the counter treatments available is PREMSYN PMS. Distributed by Chattern Inc. in Chattanooga Tn., PREMSYN PMS is available in tablets and caplets. I bought the caplets. They are both asprin and caffeine free.
****ACTIVE INGREDIENTS****
Each Caplet contains...
500 mg. Acetaminophen- An asprin substitute used to treat pain.
25 mg. Pamabrom-I could find no listing for this drug. What I did find suggests that it is commonly combined with Acetaminophen for the relief of pain. It is a common ingredient in all over the counter PMS medications.
15 mg. Pyrilamine Maleate- An Antihistamine. This is what causes the drowsiness. I can't quite figure out what the purpose is in treating PMS as it is usually used for relief from the common cold and other upper respiratory conditions.
****DOSAGE****
Recommended dosage is 2 caplets every 4-6 hours as needed not to exceed 8 pills in 24 hours.
****MY EXPERIENCE****
I can't say if PREMSYN PMS really helped me or not. I have backaches and they were not entirely gone, but the pain was reduced to a very tolerable level. There was no marked reduction in bloating. Breast tenderness was reduced too. Mood swings? All I can say is they were better. Maybe it was because I slept through them? PREMSYN PMS put me to sleep. That was not good but at least my family got the relief. When I wasn't sleeping I was too tired to play the ogre! While I didn't like sleeping so much I figure it was better than terrorizing my family. I take PREMSYN PMS when I feel myself getting overwrought and ready to morph. It generally takes about 20-30 mins to kick in. This probably isn't the best solution but it works me and my family.
