| merlot's Full Review: Pressman Franklin Goes To School |
My daughter received Franklin Goes To School for her 3rd birthday. That was over 3 years ago and this game is still a favorite in our house.
The Game
Franklin Goes To School is a board game made by Pressman for ages Preschool to 8. The game can be played with 2-6 players and is a very good learning game.
The game comes with a gameboard with a built in spinner, trivia cards, report cards, and 6 game pieces. The game pieces are cardboard pieces that fit into a little black stand. They are Franklin and his friends Bear, Beaver, Fox, Rabbit, and Snail.
The design of the gameboard is Franklin's classroom. There are footprints on the board that you follow to the school bus. The first player to the bus wins. You go through the class by spinning the spinner and answering trivia questions. If you land on a report card you select the top card from that deck and follow the directions. Some of the report cards read:
Franklin found a really neat toy soldier on the playground. Even though he wanted to keep it, he took it to the lost and found. GO AHEAD THREE STEPS
Franklin brought some markers home from school without Mr. Owl's permission. GO BACK THREE STEPS
I was a little concerned about this game when I realized it was a trivia game. I thought that once both children were able to play it would either be too hard for the youngest or too easy for the oldest. That isn't the case. The trivia questions are geared towards different age ranges.
There are 2 sides to each trivia question card. Each side has 6 questions on it. When you spin the spinner you will either land on a number with a green space or a yellow space. The color you land on determines which question will be asked of you. You move ahead the number you spun and the player next to you will ask you a question.
The questions are grouped by age. There are 3 age groups on each card. Here are a sampling of the trivia questions:
Preschool:
What is your phone number?
Name an orange vegetable that rhymes with parrot.
Including Mr. Owl, how many characters are shown in the classroom?
One of Franklin's friends is painting a picture. Which one?
Ages 6-7:
What food do people eat scrambled, poached, and sunny-side up?
Which is higher, a mountain or a hill?
When Franklin got home from school he said to his mother:"Mom, I is thirsty". What should he have said?
What is the opposite of in?
Age 8
What number is in the 10's place? 608
What ocean is off the west coast of the United States?
If Goose got four half-dollars for her birthday, how much money did she get?
What could you do with water to be able to carry it in a sieve?
My Thoughts
My kids and I love this game. I like that my 4 year old can play and is learning yet it is still challenging to my 6 1/2 year old. I like that I can challenge both kids by asking them questions in the next age category.
As I stated, this game has been in our house for over 3 years. We play it quite often and have started asking our oldest daughter a lot of the older questions to challenge her. Of course sometimes you can give them the lower age questions to make it easy, or to make the game go faster if you're tired of playing...hey it happens, LOL!
This is a great game that I recommend highly. I have recommended it to several friends and family members as great learning tools for their kids.
This isn't a game that can be played alone, unless all the kids know how to read. You will need to read questions to non-readers or play with them. Sometimes we let the kids play and we just read questions, this works out nicely if we don't necessarily feel like playing.
This game retails for about $16.95. I am not sure what the gift giver paid for this game but it is well worth the $17-20 price that I have seen it for. It is an educational game with a character kids recognize and love, as well as being fun.
