We mostly bought this for deep frying our french fries. I know that according to the makers of the french fries they can be put in the oven, but I'll tell you what. They are nasty this way. Often they come out soggy and depending on your oven, unevenly cooked. We really didn't shop around to much as we knew what we wanted. My parents have one of these and so do my in-laws. My parents use theirs all of the time for shrimp. My in-laws use it once in a blue moon for french fries for the grandkids.
We have had our Fry Daddy for about six months now. It has been great. Originally we got it for french fries, but since then we have expanded it's use a little. We now also use it for breaded mushrooms and mozzarella sticks. It is excellent for these.
All you do is plug it in and let it heat up for ten minutes making sure that it is on a pot holder or something that can handle the heat. That's it. Then you CAREFULLY place the items in the heated oil. Cooking time depends on the product, but for the mozzarella sticks it's about 1 1/2 minutes. The french fries between 2-6 minutes, depending on the thickness. Mushrooms were about 2-3 minutes.
There is a fill line inside to show you where to keep the oil level and to keep you from overfilling. It also came with a lid that fastens tightly around the top so that you can reuse the oil that you have left over. You have to be careful that the Fry Daddy is completely cool. It is very hot to the touch. The lid is only plastic and could melt.
Once in a while you will need to change the oil. All I do is dump the oil down the garbage disposal with the water one HOT. I then wipe the inside out with a paper towel. That is pretty much it. Takes just a couple of minutes.
I only wish that mine had came with a basket of some sort to make it easier to place items in the oil. It does come with a scoop so that you can retrieve the items placed in the hot oil. A temperature control knob would be nice also, but it isn't a big deal. Directions say to place the oil to a certain temperature, but with this you can't. I believe it heats to around 350 degrees, but don't quote me, please.
It isn't fancy, but neither are we. I wanted something not to big, but not to small, to deep fry the few things that we like to eat that way. This little appliance does the job that we need it to do.
