| merlot's Full Review: Pretty Purple Princess |
From a fairly early age my daughter has been into her hair and clothes. I guess it was fitting that for Christmas last year Santa brought her the Pretty Pretty Princess game.
The Game
Pretty Pretty Princess is a game designed for children ages 5 and up. It can be played with 2-4 players. My daughter is 4 and she can play the game quite well, but I think anyone much younger than about 3 1/2 might have trouble.
Pretty Pretty Princess is a board game. It comes with a puzzle board that you must put together each time you want to play, it's only 4 pieces but sometimes my youngest has trouble matching the pieces up, our game doesn't match up well so it's even hard for me sometimes. Also included is a jewelry box that also serves as the spinner and the mirror, and 4 game pieces along with jewels to match.
The object of the game is to spin the spinner and move your game piece the specified number of spaces. Each space is marked with a piece of jewelry (ring, necklace, bracelet, or earrings). You will need to collect all the pieces in your jewelry collection. Ahh, but you're not really a Princess without the crown so you'll have to collect that also.
But beware, as with any good Princess story there must be an evil element. That's where the black ring comes in. If you land on the Black Ring space you'll have to put the black ring on. If someone else has it on they will be most happy to relinquish it to you. You cannot win the game if you have all your jewelry and the black ring.
Don't worry there's plenty of chances to get rid of the black ring. If you're not lucky enough to pass it off to one of your fellow Princess Wannabees maybe you'll get lucky and land on the "Put a Piece Back" space. If you do you can get rid of the dreaded black ring.
The first person to collect all her jewels and the crown is the Pretty Pretty Princess. She gets to turn over the spinner and gaze at herself in the mirror. My daughter, yeah she pretty much gazes throughout the whole game.
The Fun Factor
I have to admit, as silly as the game sounds, it's actually kind of fun. Both of my daughters like playing it and they love seeing Mom put the jewels on, but they especially love when Mom has the black ring.
I have tried, to no avail, to get my husband to play this game with us. We even told him he could wear his Sacramento KINGS (GO KINGS) hat and t-shirt instead of jewels. I guess he's just not in touch with his feminine side because he refuses to play this game, oh well his loss. LOL.
Final Thoughts
This is actually a pretty good game. There are some small parts which could present a problem for smaller children. The trick is to make sure all the pieces get put back in the jewelry box and don't get lost.
We do have the occasional fit throwing (mostly from the 4 year old-what else would you expect? I told you she thinks she's a Princess). She tends to get upset if she has to wear the black ring or if the crown gets taken away from her. We're working on sportsmanship.
There is no reading involved in this game. You look at the pictures and they tell you which piece of jewelry you need to take. Smaller children might get a little stumped by the "Take Any Piece" or "Put a Piece Back" spaces so they may need a little help there.
Little girls who like to dress up and play games will love this game. At under $10 it makes a great birthday or Christmas gift and I do recommend it.
