Mira calix is one of the few females working in the left field experimental electronic music. She has released two full albums and a couple of EP:s on Britains most well known electronic listening music label Warp Records.
Prickle from 2001 is one such Ep. It consists of two tracks. The first one is a long multi-sectioned 19 minute piece. This song gives a pretty good example of Mira calix's sound. most easily it can be described as ambient music. After a start of oragnic buzzes and chirps a slowly moving string sound and a piano plays a simple little melody. Later on Calix uses her voice. Here as almost every other track she sings on she mixes her voice low int the mix. So the lyrics are impossible to dechiper. Later a thudding beats pounds along with the melody.
about 8 minutes into the piece the second section begins. this part is less meloidic using more organic noises along with sad flute like sounds and a bass drum pulse
Overall Pricle is quite soothing when compared to some of MIra Calix's other music wich can be quite unsettling at times. WHat she does best is using organic like sounds. This means her ambient soundscapes often sound less cold and robotic than a lot of electronic music. Quite a lot of the sounds seem to come from her sampling real life sounds and not frpm programming a synth or a piece of software.
I'd reccomend this EP if one can find it, it's not exactly pop music but it's quite calm and beautiful in it's sound. It's smoother to listen to than any of her full lenght releases.
The second song here Is a remix of an old Calix song and it's called "skin with me". The mix is done by calix's friend Andrea Parker and it sound's more like an Andrea Parker track than a Mira Calix track. Lots of omnious synth and vocal sounds along with a slow drum loop and speaker rattling bass wich is Parkers speciality. This is a niece enough song however it dosen't sit very well with the main track of the disc.
If you can find this Ep for a resonable price and you're interested in electronic music pick it up. Not because it's electronic music made by female muscians but because it's good electronic music.
