Great concept boat

Written: Nov 27 '02
Pros:Versatility, performance, comfort, quality, features
Cons:Not great at any one thing
The Bottom Line: The boat does almost everything well, so go with it unless you're into extremes of whitewater or long expeditions.

Whether it's kayaks, bikes or you-name-it, manufacturers always try the do-it-all model, which often is a do-nothing-well product. Prijon seems to have pulled it off, though, with a craft that can best be described as a long whitewater design with volume and storage. At 14'5" with a 25" beam, it scoots along pretty well. You will need good stroke control because without it the flat bottom will allow you to veer all over, but that's the price of maneuverability. Waves, wake and wind can jerk you around without the rudder option. I don't like rudders, but do not have much trouble with the adverse conditions. I don't like rudders because of the mushy pegs, but this is on boat I might consider a retrofit because the pegs stay put. The rudder is controlled by a clever "gas-pedal" device that rotates around the peg. On moving water, it turns and draws very well for a boat of its length, and I have no problems with eddy turns and peelouts. The bow is not upswept or flared, so it can bury itself in big waves, holes, etc.

The quality is excellent and the materials all but bulletproof. Don't even think about the cupping and warpage you see in lesser brands. This is one stiff, solid hull, without being heavy. The carry handles are sturdy and comfortable. The hatches are generous in size, flush to the deck and you don't have to be a four-handed gorilla to seal them. There is not only an elastic cargo net on the foredeck, but under it as well. That is, you have some handy storage in the cockpit near your knees. The seat is very comfortable and the pegs adjust easily and stand firm. I'll probably add a bungee behind the cockpit to facilitate paddle-float rescue, but that's about all that's lacking. The bash guards on the bow and stern offer protection and eye appeal. In short, the boat does a lot of things very well.
